Die antiken Quellen berichten von einer alten und lang andauernden Feindschaft zwischen Thessalern und Phokern, die „von Anbeginn“ im Konflikt miteinander gestanden haben sollen. Die ersten Streitigkeiten sollen auf die Zeit der Einwanderung der Thessaler in ihr Siedlungsgebiet zurückgehen; später kämpften Thessaler und Phoker in weiteren Kriege in größeren Koalitionen gegeneinander, vor allem im sogenannten 1. wie im 3. Heiligen Krieg. Zur Zeit dieses letzteren Krieges erlebten die Phoker ihren spektakulärsten Aufstieg und Niedergang: In der öffentlichen Debatte kam es damals zu einer starken Umdeutung der archaischen Konflikte gegen die Thessaler und damit der phokischen Vergangenheit, die wiederum von der Erinnerungskultur des 4. Jahrhunderts geprägt war. Das vorliegende Buch versucht, diese Geschichte der phokisch-thessalischen Kriege und der Phoker im Allgemeinen jenseits dieser Umdeutung zu rekonstruieren. Dabei werden die komplexen historischen, archäologischen, religionsgeschichtlichen und anthropologischen Fragen, die diese Konflikte aufwerfen, untersucht.

Were Athenians and Boiotians natural enemies in the Archaic and Classical period? The scholarly consensus is yes. Roy van Wijk, however, re-evaluates this commonly held assumption and shows that, far from perpetually hostile, their relationship was distinctive and complex. Moving between diplomatic normative behaviour, commemorative practice and the lived experience in the borderlands, he offers a close analysis of literary sources, combined with recent archaeological and epigraphic material, to reveal an aspect to neighbourly relations that has hitherto escaped attention. He argues that case studies such as the Mazi plain and Oropos show that territorial disputes were not a mainstay in diplomatic interactions and that commemorative practices in Panhellenic and local sanctuaries do not reflect an innate desire to castigate the neighbour. The book breaks new ground by reconstructing a more positive and polyvalent appreciation of neighbourly relations based on the local lived experience. Much like our own time, the ancient Greek world was constantly expanding and becoming more connected to global networks. The landscape was shaped by an ecology of city-states, local formations that were stitched into the wider Mediterranean world. While the local is often seen as less significant than the global stage of politics, religion, and culture, localism, argues historian Hans Beck has had a pervasive influence on communal experience in a world of fast-paced change. Far from existing as outliers, citizens in these communities were deeply concerned with maintaining local identity, commercial freedom, distinct religious cults, and much more. Thessaly was a region of great importance in the ancient Greek world, possessing both agricultural abundance and a strategic position between north and south. It presents historians with the challenge of seeing beyond traditional stereotypes (wealth and witches, horses and hospitality) that have coloured perceptions of its people from antiquity to the present day. It also presents a complex and illuminating interaction between polis and ethnos identity. In daily life, most Thessalians primarily operated within, and identified with, their specific polis; at the same time, the regional dimension – being Thessalian – was rarely out of sight for long. It manifested itself in stories told, in deities worshipped, in modes of political co-operation, in language, rituals, sites and objects. Chapter by chapter, this book follows the emergence, development and adaptation of Thessalian regional identity from the Archaic period to the early second century BC. In so doing, rather than rejecting ancient stereotypes as a mere inconvenience for the historian, it considers the constant dialogue between Thessalian self-presentation and depictions of the Thessalian character by other Greeks. It also confronts some of the prejudices and assumptions still influencing modern approaches to studying the region. Lange Zeit stand in der althistorischen Forschung der Name Midas synonym für das phrygische Königreich, das häufig auf diesen einen Herrscher reduziert wurde. Neue archäologische Forschungen der letzten Jahrzehnte auf phrygischem Gebiet zwingen jedoch zum Umdenken, und ermöglichen, in Verbindung mit klassischen und altorientalischen Quellen, ein differenzierteres Bild der historischen Entwicklung Kleinasiens, und insbesondere Phrygiens, seit dem Niedergang des Hethiterreiches im 12. Jahrhundert v. Chr. bis zur persischen Eroberung Mitte des 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. zu zeichnen. Im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit stehen dabei Untersuchungen zur möglichen Einwanderung der Phryger aus Europa, der Reichsbildung in Phrygien sowie der Anzahl und Herrschaftsfolge der phrygischen Könige und ihrer Interaktion mit den späthethitischen Kleinfürstentümern und den benachbarten Reichen der Assyrer, der Lyder und den Griechen.
