Excerpt from Things Japanese: Being Notes on Various Subjects Connected With Japan for the Use of Travellers and Others As the nearest earthly approach to Paradise or to Letus-land, so fairy-like, said he, is its scenery, so exquisite its art, so much more lovely still that almost divine sweetness of disposition, that charm of demeanour, that politeness humble without servility and elaborate without affectation, which place Japan high above all other countries in nearly all those things that make life worth living. (we do not give his exact words, but we give the general drift.) - Now, do you think that the Japanese were satisfied with this meed of praise? Not a bit of it. Out comes an article next morning in the chief paper which had been represented at the banquet, - an article acknowledging, indeed, the truth of Sir Edwin's description, but pointing out that it conveyed, not: praise, but pitiless condemnation. Art forsooth, scenery, sweetness of disposition! Cries this editor. Why did not Sir Edwin praise us for huge industrial enterprises, for commercial talent, for wealth. Excerpt from Japan, the Place and the People Thus it will be seen that the Japanese stem, already old and long cultivated, has been sturdy enough to receive and nourish successfully the grafting of Occidental civilisation; and that all the achievements of the last fifty years, precipitate and extraordinary as they may seem, are nothing more than the gradual outcome of deeply implanted ideas and well directed designs. So favoured by Providence in its foundation as well as in its development, the mission of the Japanese Empire must be at once grave and glorious. The present is the age of peace, in aspiration at least, if not in practice. Electricity and steam have almost annihilated space, and the nations of the world have been brought into closest touch with each other. Under these circumstances nothing can be more conducive to the general welfare than the preservation of peace and common accord. This the government and the people of Japan fully realise. They recognise no nobler duty and no surer safeguard against the designs of selfish ambition than the unremitting effort to promote good will and cordial relations with all nations. This they believe is especially true as regards their immediate neighbours, to whom they are always ready to lend a helping hand along the path of progress they themselves are treading. And since none have a more vital interest in all that affects the welfare of the Orient than theirs, they do not apprehend that this sentiment will not be misunderstood, or that due weight will not be accorded to Japan's unique position and just aspirations. Excerpt from Japanese Culture: Its Development and Characteristics All the essays collected in this volume originated as papers comprising six sessions of the Tenth Pacific Science Congress, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, from August 21 to September 6, 1961. The way these six sessions came into being exemplifies a fresh step of development in studies of Japanese society and culture, happily evidenced on other recent occasions as well, and the temptation is strong to record this step in its historical context as the papers of this segment of the Congress go to press. The new trend referred to is one of explicit collaboration between Japanese and American scholars in Japanese studies, important because it promises to relieve one-sidedness and enrich the field as a whole. It will be evident from the list of contributors to this volume that Japanese participated in the six Congress sessions in almost equal numbers with Americans. Each session, moreover, had Japanese and American co-chairmen and was organized under mutual consultation. In certain cases, joint participation in the session was the sequel to a period of collaborative research, though such close relationship has not yet become the rule. This joint organization and participation, a mere organizational detail in itself, gathers significance when placed against its proper background, the development of the study of Japanese society. Japanese studies have evolved through two or more stages, and we venture to point to intensified collaboration in research and reporting, evidenced to a modest degree in the present papers, as a primary feature of the stage now commencing. A glance at the past and present situations will point to such an outcome. For a very long time after Japan first renewed her contact with the outside world in the middle nineteenth century, she remained the mysterious island nation of the Orient, best known for a few quaint customs and delicate arts - her geisha, haiku poems, woodblock prints, and embroidered kimono. Social science study remained rather casual, with exceptions in the fields of economics, politics, and archeology. John Embree's admirable community study, Suye Mura: A Japanese Village (Chicago, 1939), was an outstanding exception to the exoticism that tended to prevail even on the eve of World War II. His clear-eyed depiction of local organization presaged an era of close examination of details of Japanese society, an era that was hastened by the wartime imperative to acquire intelligence about all aspects of Japan. After peace returned to the Pacific, Japan was revealed to be an area of extraordinary interest to social scientists of every hue. Compiled in this volume is original material on Japanese arts and culture from the prehistoric era to the Meiji Restoration (1867). These sources, including many translated here for the first time, are placed in their historical context and outfitted with brief commentaries, allowing the reader to make connections to larger concepts and values found in Japanese culture. This book contains material on the visual and literary arts, as well as primary texts on topics not easily classified in Western categories, such as the martial and culinary arts, the art of tea, and flower arranging. More than sixty color and black-and-white illustrations enrich the collection and provide further insights into Japanese artistic and cultural values. Also included are a bibliography of English-language and Japanese sources and an extensive list of suggested further readings.
