The pictorial turn in the humanities and social sciences has foregrounded the political power of images and the extent to which historical, political, social, and cultural processes and practices are shaped visually. Political iconographies are taken to interpret norms of actions, support ideological formations, and enhance moral concepts. Visual rhetorics are understood as active players in the construction and contestation of the political realm and public space. The twenty-one articles by scholars from Europe and the United States explore the political function and cultural impact of images from the perspectives of Art History, American Studies, Visual Culture Studies, History, and Political Science. The contributions in particular address the complex interplay between agent and addressee in the public space as well as issues of national identity, discourses of inclusion and exclusion, and the designation of political spaces within transnational contexts. The publication is part of the interdisciplinary research initiative “Perceiving and Understanding: Functions, Perception Processes, Forms of Visualizations, Cultural Strategies of Pictures and Texts” at the University of Regensburg.

Kunst und Politik sind seit jeher auf das Engste miteinander verflochten. Künstler werden vom politischen Geschehen inspiriert und interpretieren es individuell, entwerfen Gegenwelten, visualisieren Utopien, idealisieren und prangern an. Gleichzeitig stand und steht die Kunst immer auch im Dienste der Politik. Es sind seit Jahrtausenden die politisch Mächtig(st)en, die sich als Stifter, Heilsbringer oder Herrscher portraitieren lassen, die als Mäzene Künstler protegieren um ihren Ruhm mittels Kunstwerken für die Nachwelt anschaulich zu sichern suchen. Später sind es Nationaldenkmäler, Staatskunst und -architektur, die von dem Wert und teilweise auch der Überlegenheit bestimmter Systeme, Ideologien oder Gesellschaften zeugen sollen. Trotz dieser engen Verbindung ist die „Kunst“ an sich nie ein Untersuchungsgegenstand oder Analysekriterium der Politikwissenschaft gewesen, werden Kunstwerke kunsthistorisch kaum in ihrer Funktion für politische Systeme – also aus politikwissenschaftlicher Perspektive – betrachtet. Der vorliegende Band versteht sich somit als eine „Handlungsanleitung zur interdisziplinären Offenheit“ – er möchte Interesse wecken für die Schnittmengen, die sich zwischen Kunst und Politik ergeben und will gleichzeitig zu neuen, übergeordneten Fragestellungen anregen.

Danach begann er ein Soziologie-Studium in Berlin und wechselte 1993 an die Filmhochschule in Potsdam-Babelsberg, an der er im Jahre 2000 seinen Abschluss machte. Heute gehört Thomas Brussig zu den international angesehenen deutschen Autoren. Seine Bücher wurden bisher in 28 Sprachen übersetzt und waren fast allesamt Bestseller. Er erhielt einige Auszeichnungen und Preise, darunter auch die Carl-Zuckmayer-Medaille des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz im Jahre 2005. Heutzutage lebt Thomas Brussig als freiberuflicher Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautor in Berlin und Mecklenburg. Unter seinen erfolgreichsten Werken „Helden wie wir“ (1995) und „Am kürzesten Ende der Sonnenallee“ (1999) ist auch der Roman „Wie es leuchtet“ (2004). „Er spielt in der Zeit von August 1989 bis zur Wiedervereinigung 1990. Die Geschichten der einzelnen Protagonisten zeichnen diese Zeit aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln nach. Die einzelnen Handlungsstränge werden separat entwickelt und treffen sich, mosaikartig zusammengesetzt, von Zeit zu Zeit, so dass eine stimmige Momentaufnahme der deutsch-deutschen Wendegesellschaft entsteht. This volume aims to question, challenge, supplement, and revise current understandings of the relationship between aesthetic and political operations. The authors transcend disciplinary boundaries and nurture a wide-ranging sensibility about art and sovereignty, two highly complex and interwoven dimensions of human experience that have rarely been explored by scholars in one conceptual space. Several chapters consider the intertwining of modern philosophical currents and modernist artistic forms, in particular those revealing formal abstraction, stylistic experimentation, self-conscious expression, and resistance to traditional definitions of “Art.” Other chapters deal with currents that emerged as facets of art became increasingly commercialized, merging with industrial design and popular entertainment industries. Some contributors address Post-Modernist art and theory, highlighting power relations and providing sceptical, critical commentary on repercussions of colonialism and notions of universal truths rooted in Western ideals. By interfering with established dichotomies and unsettling stable debates related to art and sovereignty, all contributors frame new perspectives on the co-constitution of artworks and practices of sovereignty.
