Surrealism was ostensibly directed at the emancipation of the human spirit, but it represented only male aspirations and fantasies until a number of women artists began to redefine its agenda in the later 1930s. This book addresses the former, using a 'thick description' of the historically specific circumstances which required the male Surrealists to manufacture a sexual reputation of narcissism and misogyny. These circumstances were determined by 'hegemonic masculinity', an ideological construct which had little to do with individual masculinities. In male Surrealism, the 'beribboned bomb' signified something both attractive and volatile, a specific instance of the Surrealist principle of convulsive beauty. In hegemonic masculinity, similar devices served as metaphors of the sexuality all men were supposed to possess. The intersection of these two axes produced an imagery of unrepentant violence.

Die Beweggründe, welche mich zur Abfassung der vorliegenden Schrift veranlassten, waren sehr verschiedener Natur. Einerseits war ich freudig überrascht darüber, dass sämmtliche wichtigeren Erscheinungen an den Dynamomaschinen, eine nach der anderen, sich mit Erfolg auf dem von mir betretenen Wege behandeln liessen, und fühlte das Bedürfniss, meine Aufsätze zusammenzufassen und in Einklang zu bringen; andererseits empfand ich seit längerer Zeit Unbehagen über die Art, wie zum Theil meine Arbeiten behandelt wurden, namentlich im Auslande; und endlich drängte es mich, einen nachdrücklichen Versuch zu machen, die Empirie, die bei den Dynamomaschinen in der elektrotechnischen Praxis herrscht, auf das ihr gebührende Maass zurückzuführen und an Stelle derselben überall, wo es begründet ist, einfache Rechnungen zu setzen. Von meiner Behauptung, dass nun alle wichtigeren Erscheinungen der Dynamomaschinen erklärt und in einfache Formen gebracht seien, ersuche ich den Leser, sich durch Lektüre dieser Schrift zu über zeugen. In Bezug auf die Beurtheilung meiner Aufsätze durch Andere widerstrebt es mir, ins Einzelne zu gehen; dagegen möchte ich mir erlauben, meiner Ansicht über die Arbeiten Anderer hier Ausdruck zu geben. Einer der Ersten, welche über Dynamomaschinen geschrieben haben, ist Dr. Hopkinson; seine Arbeiten werden in neuerer Zeit öfter als von grundlegender Bedeutung dargestellt. Diese Ansicht scheint mir nicht gerechtfertigt; denn Herrn Hopkinson's Schriften IV Vorwort. über Dynamomaschinen sind durchaus qualitativen Oharakters, quantitative Betrachtungen irgend welcher Form kommen in den selben kaum vor, und eine Ergründung des Gegenstandes ohne quantitative Betrachtungen ist doch nicht denkbar.
