Hiermit wird der Vortrag, den ich am 20. Januar 1971 in der Klasse für Geisteswissenschaften der Rheinisch-Westfälischen Akademie der Wissen schaften gehalten habe, im Druck vorgelegt. Die ursprüngliche Fassung ist beträchtlich erweitert und der Gang der Untersuchung stellenweise modi fiziert worden. Gemäß einer mit dem damaligen Sekretar der Klasse, Herrn Prof. Kötting, und seinem Nachfolger im Amt, Herrn Prof. Dihle, getrof fenen Absprache sind hierbei auch die Beiträge zu der dem Vortrag folgenden Diskussion verwertet worden. An ihr haben sich als Mitglieder der Akade mie oder geladene Gäste die Herren Professoren Dihle, Hegel, Klinkenberg, Kötting, Landgrebe, Lausberg, Lübbe, Ohly und Schall er beteiligt, denen für ihre kritischen Hinweise und ergänzenden Ausführungen auch hier herz lich zu danken ist. Die von Dieter Schaller in freundschaftlicher Weise ge botene Möglichkeit, mit ihm die Ergebnisse unmittelbar vor der Drucklegung erneut zu erörtern, ist für mich ein willkommener Anlaß, um ihm meine dankbare Verbundenheit an dieser Stelle zu bezeugen. Die Veröffentlichung geht zufällig in einem Zeitpunkt zum Druck, in dem sich die Erhebung Gregors VII. auf den päpstlichen Stuhl zum neunhundert sten Male jährt. Anders als in der Sturmzeit des Kulturkampfs vor hundert Jahren, hat unsere Gegenwart von dem weltgeschichtlich folgenreichen Ereig nis, das sich am 22. April 1073 vollzogen hat, auffallend wenig Notiz ge nommen.

This book is a detailed study of Hugh of Flavigny and his chronicle, which is widely recognised as one of the most important narratives of a crucial period of European history, that is, the Investiture Contest. The eleventh-century papal reform transformed the western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni.

The essays in this volume in honour of Martin Brett address issues relating to the compilation and transmission of canon law collections, the role of bishops in their dissemination, as well as the interpretation and use of law in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The studies are grouped thematically under the headings 'Bishops and Their Texts', and 'Texts and the Use of Canon Law'. These reflect important areas of contention in the historiographical literature and hence will further the debates regarding not simply the compilation and dissemination of canonical collections in the earlier middle ages, but also the development of the practical application of canon law within Europe, especially after c.1080. Individually, the contributors offer new viewpoints on key issues and questions relating to the creation of canonical texts, their transmission and use on both sides of the English Channel in the decades either side of the year 1100.
