Viktor Frankl und die Logotherapie sind mittlerweile weltweit bekannt. Mit seinem Leben und Werk hat Frankl fast das ganze zwanzigste Jahrhundert (1905–1997) begleitet – und eine deutliche Spur hinterlassen. Die Logothe- pie und Existenzanalyse, wie sein Werk mit dem vollen Namen heißt, ist im Wesentlichen ein medizinisch-psychotherapeutisches System, allerdings mit einem umfassend dargelegten philosophischen Menschen- und Weltbild. Die menschliche Sinnfrage ist das Markenzeichen der Logotherapie und der Wille zum Sinn das unterscheidend Menschliche. Frankls ganzes Streben geht dahin, aufzuzeigen oder zu beschwören, dass das Leben als solches und das des Einzelnen grundsätzlich sinnträchtig ist und bleibt – auch angesichts der tragischen Trias, wie er sie nennt, von Schicksal, Schuld und Tod. Die B- schaft der Logotherapie ist der Glaube an einen unbedingten Sinn. Damit kommt eine letztgültige, transzendental-religiöse Dimension in den Blick. Die Logotherapie ist auf alle Fälle anthropologisch ganzheitlich konzipiert in dem Sinne, dass den wesentlichen Dimensionen des Menschseins, also der leib-seelisch-geistigen Ganzheit, Rechnung getragen wird. Frankls besonderes Augenmerk und spezifischer Beitrag zu den Heilungsdisziplinen liegt all- dings auf der geistig-existentiellen Realität. Die Medizin allgemein hat sich naturgemäß immer mit dem Leiblichen, der Physis bzw. dem Soma befasst. Sie hat mehr und mehr gelernt, sich mit dem Seelischen, der Psyche zu befassen, auch mit Psyche und Physis im Zusammenspiel miteinander: in der Psyc- somatik.

Seit ihrer Publikation Ende der 1940er, Anfang der 1950er Jahre sind die Logotherapie und Existenzanalyse Viktor E. Frankls zumal unter kirchlich engagierten Beratern und Therapeuten auf großes Interesse gestoßen. Denn sie werden nicht nur weithin als mit dem christlichen Glauben vereinbar gesehen, sie lassen sich auch vom christlichen Glauben her verstehen und erlauben von daher die Hereinnahme seelsorglicher Elemente in das therapeutische Geschehen (und umgekehrt). Frankls Schülerin Elisabeth Lukas kann geradezu als Kronzeugin dafür gelten; andere - wie zum Beispiel Christa Meves - sind ihr darin gefolgt. Mit entscheidend dafür ist, dass es sich dabei um ein außenorientiertes Verfahren handelt, das die Heilung nicht von der Beschäftigung des Patienten mit sich selbst erhofft, sondern von seiner Ausrichtung auf den Sinn und die Werte, die ihm in seiner Lebenssituation entgegentreten, und von der Übernahme der Aufgaben, die sein Leben ihm stellt. Demgegenüber bedeutet die in den späten 1980er und frühen 1990er Jahren von Alfried Längle vorgenommene Neuausrichtung von Logotherapie und Existenzanalyse eine entschiedene Abkehr von jedem Transzendenzbezug und eine ebenso entschiedene Hinwendung zur Innenorientierung. Dadurch wird aber das Original nicht weniger wertvoll. Es erneut ins Bewusstsein zu rufen und auf die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten hinzuweisen, die es nach wie vor bietet, ist das Anliegen dieser Publikation.

Dieser eigenständige Ansatz wird auch die "Dritte Wiener Richtung der Psychotherapie" genannt und ist eine international anerkannte, sinnzentrierte Psychotherapierichtung, die sich mit der Frage nach dem Sinn im Leben eines Menschen beschäftigt. In Deutschland wird sie, nach dem Tod Viktor Frankls, hauptsächlich durch seine Schülerin Elisabeth Lukas weitergeführt. Ich habe dieses Thema gewählt, da die Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens für die meisten Menschen von großer Bedeutung ist, ob dies nun bewusst oder unbewusst geschieht. In einer Zeit, die geprägt ist von Egoismus, Materialismus und Konsum, stellen sich die Menschen immer öfter die Frage, was für einen Sinn ihr Leben eigentlich hat. Bei dieser Frage zu helfen, ist das wesentliche Anliegen der Logotherapie, wobei wichtig ist, dass es keinen allgemeinen Sinn für alle gibt, sondern jeder seinen Sinn für sich persönlich suchen und finden muss. Zu Anfang wird sich diese Arbeit mit der Biographie Viktor Emil Frankls, die eine große Bedeutung für sein späteres Lebenswerk hat, beschäftigen. Zum besseren Verständnis werden dann die Begriffe der "Logotherapie" und der "Existenzanalyse" näher betrachtet und die Logotherapie wird innerhalb des Systems der Psychotherapie eingeordnet. Der längste Teil dieser Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem zentralen Thema der Logotherapie, dem "Menschen als Sinnsuchenden".
