Diese Arbeit hat nicht den Anspruch, ein vollumfängliches Bild der Mafia darzulegen. Die Literatur zu Themen wie der Entstehung und Geschichte der Mafia ist ebenso umfassend und interessant wie die Verbindungen der ehrenwerten Gesellschaft zu Staat, Politik und Justiz. Viel mehr wird sich auf drei Kernelemente konzentriert, die für das erfolgreiche Bestehen und Fortdauern von mafiosen Gruppierungen von großer Bedeutung sind. Im Kapitel über das Vertrauen beispielhaft dargelegt, wie es zu einem Handel zwischen zwei sich misstrauenden Akteuren kommt, welche Rolle der Mafioso dabei spielt und mit welcher Ressource er handelt, um Handel zu ermöglichen. Im darauffolgenden Abschnitt wird die Notwendigkeit und Besonderheit von Aufnahmeritualen beschrieben, um ein Verständnis dafür zu erlangen, wie einerseits innerhalb einer mafiosen Familie ein hohes Vertrauen und starke Loyalitätsbeziehungen entstehen und vorherrschen, andererseits wie grausame Gewalttaten gerechtfertigt werden können. Im abschließenden Kapitel wird es um die entscheidende Rolle der Reputation gehen, wobei deutlich wird, weshalb es innerhalb der Mafia so häufig zu Gewalttaten und Morden kommt.
