Excerpt from Die Metapher bei Lucrez Von solchen nun, welche in neuerer Zeit uber die Metaphern arbeiteten, wurden dieselben vielfach nach den verschiedenen Ge bieten geordnet, denen die Bilder entnommen wurden. Es wurden etwa zuerst alle Metaphern aufgezählt, welche vom Menschen herge memmen sind, dann diejenigen, welche auf die verschiedenen Thätigkeiten des Menschen sich beziehen, schliesslich diejenigen, welche der Betrachtung der Natur entsprungen sind. Diese Ein teilung hat etwas Bestechendes; sie erscheint so einfach und natür lich. In Wirklichkeit ergeben sich aber ähnliche Schwierigkeiten, wie bei der zuerst angeführten: die Gebiete sind nicht scharf genug abgegrenzt; überdies ist die Zersplitterung eine so weit gehende, dass die Uebersichtlichkeit darunter leidet; besonders empfindlich wird sich dies bemerklich machen, wenn wir nicht lediglich feststellen wollen, aus welchen Gebieten ein Schriftsteller mit Vorliebe seine Bilder nimmt, sondern Einblick gewinnen wollen in das Wesen und die Entwicklung der Metapher überhaupt. Scholars have traditionally viewed the Italian Renaissance artist as a gifted, but poorly educated craftsman whose complex and demanding works were created with the assistance of a more educated advisor. In this volume, Angela Dressen explores the range of educational opportunities that were available to the Italian Renaissance artist. Considering artistic formation within the history of education, Dressen focuses on the training of highly skilled, average artists, revealing a general level of learning that was much more substantial than has been assumed. Jakob Moser liest Lukrez' philosophische Epik als einen vierfachen Übersetzungsprozess, der die epikureische Lehre auf einer sprachlichen, literarischen, kulturellen und konzeptuellen Ebene transformiert. Dieser Prozess, so zeigt das vorliegende Buch, schlägt sich nicht zuletzt in Lukrez' Übersetzungsvokabular nieder. Die schöpferische Sprache des Dichters – seine dädalische Zunge – erweist sich dabei als ein Bindeglied, das poetische Physik und physikalische Poetik verbindet. With his De rerum natura, the Roman poet Lucretius set out to do no less than render the entire universe as a text, from the most minute motions of single atoms to events on a cosmic scale. Lucretius drew upon Epicurus' Greek natural philosophy, but in order to attract and convince his Roman audience, he wove it into the fabric of Latin poetry. The present book proposes to read Lucretius' philosophical epic as a four-fold process of translation that transforms Epicurean doctrine on linguistic, literary, cultural, and conceptual levels. This process, as will be demonstrated, is reflected in Lucretius' vocabulary of translation. The poet's own creative use of language – his daedalic tongue – is the link that holds his poetic physics and physical poetics together.
