Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2022 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 1,0, Universität Mannheim (Historisches Institut), Veranstaltung: Selbstzeugnisse im Mittelalter, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Carlo Ginzburg, zu dem Zeitpunkt zwischen Geschichte und Anthropologie stehend, gehört zu einer Gruppe von Historikern, die in den späten 1970ern ebenfalls die herrschende Geschichtsschreibung hinterfragte und herausforderte. Nicht umsonst nimmt er in der Einleitung zu seiner bekannten Fallstudie über einen friaulischen Müller Bezug auf Brechts lesenden Arbeiter. Der Protagonist seines Pionierwerks der Mikrogeschichte „Der Käse und die Würmer. Die Welt eines Müllers um 1600“, das 1976 in der Originalfassung erschien, ist zwar kein lesender Arbeiter, dafür aber ein lesender Müller. Die Inquisitionsakten, auf denen die Studie beruht, sind 1990 erstmals in einer Edition herausgegeben von Andrea del Col erschienen. Die Vertreter der aufkommenden Mikrogeschichte wandten sich sowohl gegen den klassischen Historismus, als auch gegen die Sozialgeschichtsschreibung sowie Metanarrative wie dem Marxismus. Sie setzten sich ebenfalls mit dem Postmodernismus kritisch auseinander. Ihren Vertretern und Befürwortern zufolge bietet die Mikrogeschichte einen Ausweg aus dem Konflikt, den Brecht in seinem Gedicht aufmacht. Um Biographien über die Männer im Zentrum der Macht zu schreiben, bräuchte es keine Mikrogeschichte, denn diese standen seit jeher im Fokus der Historiographie, sogar vor der Geburt der modernen Geschichtsschreibung. Tatsächlich hat die Mikrogeschichte das Potenzial, die von Brechts "lesendem Arbeiter" aufgeworfenen Fragen zu beantworten. Mit Domenico Scandella, auch genannt Menocchio, schaffte es Ginzburg einen lesenden Müller in den Mittelpunkt seiner historischen Arbeit zu setzen. Mit seinem Werk hat nicht nur der auf den ersten Blick durchaus seltsame Müller eine Stimme bekommen, sondern auch die dahinterliegende bäuerliche Unterschichtenkultur.

These are the opening words of Ernst Bloch's first major work, The Spirit of Utopia, written mostly in 1915-16, published in its first version just after the First World War, republished five years later, 1923, in the version here presented for the first time in English translation. The Spirit of Utopia is one of the great historic books from the beginning of the century, but it is not an obsolete one. In its style of thinking, a peculiar amalgam of biblical, Marxist, and Expressionist turns, in its analytical skills deeply informed by Simmel, taking its information from both Hegel and Schopenhauer for the groundwork of its metaphysics of music but consistently interpreting the cultural legacy in the light of a certain Marxism, Bloch's Spirit of Utopia is a unique attempt to rethink the history of Western civilizations as a process of revolutionary disruptions and to reread the artworks, religions, and philosophies of this tradition as incentives to continue disrupting. The alliance between messianism and Marxism, which was proclaimed in this book for the first time with epic breadth, has met with more critique than acclaim. The expressive and baroque diction of the book was considered as offensive as its stubborn disregard for the limits of "disciplines." Yet there is hardly a "discipline" that didn't adopt, however unknowingly, some of Bloch's insights, and his provocative associations often proved more productive than the statistical account of social shifts. The first part of this philosophical meditation--which is also a narrative, an analysis, a rhapsody, and a manifesto--concerns a mode of "self-encounter" that presents itself in the history of music from Mozart through Mahler as an encounter with the problem of a community to come. This "we-problem" is worked out by Bloch in terms of a philosophy of the history of music. The "self-encounter," however, has to be conceived as "self-invention," as the active, affirmative fight for freedom and social justice, under the sign of Marx. The second part of the book is entitled "Karl Marx, Death and the Apocalypse." I am. We are. That's hardly anything. But enough to start.

The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. Building on Maurice Halbwachs's idea that memory, like language, is a social phenomenon as well as an individual one, he argues that memory has a cultural dimension too. A better understanding of how immigrants contribute to the U.S. economy is important. Few studies have examined how immigrant entrepreneurs contribute to total U.S. business ownership, formation, and income. This book examines the contributions of immigrant business owners and their businesses to the U.S. economy. The role of immigrants in high-tech entrepreneurship in the U.S. is also quantified. Among other findings, it was determined that nearly 1.5 million immigrant business owners in the U.S. represent 12.5 percent of all business owners. Moreover, the total business income generated by immigrant business owners is $67 billion, 11.6 percent of all business income in the U.S. In addition, although business owners from Mexico constitute the largest share of immigrant business owners, immigrants from around the world are sources of U.S. business formation, ownership and income. These findings indicate that immigrants make large and important contributions to business ownership, formation, and income in the U.S., particularly in some states and economic sectors. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.
