Zur Zeit läuft ein Film in unseren Kinos, der sämtliche Kassenrekorde erzielt und bereits nach wenigen Wochen Spieldauer mit einem Einspielergebnis von weltweit mehr als 1,8 Milliarden US-Dollar der kommerziell erfolgreichste Film der bisherigen Filmgeschichte ist. Das Fantasy-Epos nennt sich „Avatar“ und entstammt der Arbeit des Oscar prämierten Regisseurs James Cameron. Das Faszinierende an diesem cineastischen „Meisterwerk“ ist nicht die Story oder die schauspielerische Leistung der Akteure, sondern vielmehr der Einsatz einer digitalen Technik, die zwar schon vorher existierte, jedoch nie so gezielt und in so großem Rahmen verwendet worden ist. Durch den Einsatz virtueller 3-D-Kameras und eines neuartigen Kamera-Fusion-Systems wird dafür gesorgt, dass der Zuschauer das Gefühl hat, die Filmhandlung tatsächlich am eigenen Leib mitzuerleben. Nie zuvor hat ein Film dem Publikum ein so opulentes optisches Spektakel geboten. „Avatar“ stellt somit jetzt schon einen Meilenstein der Mediengeschichte dar und erweist sich mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit als Ausgangspunkt eines neuen Kino-Zeitalters. Einen ähnlich großen Umbruch in dem eigentlich noch sehr jungen Medium des Films, gab es bisher lediglich zwei Mal. Zum einen mit der Umstellung von Stumm- auf Tonfilme und zum anderen mit dem langsamen Wechsel vom Schwarz-Weiß- zum Farbfilm. Das in unserer digitalisierten und vernetzten Welt, in der nahezu jeder Bürger Fernsehen, Computer, Internet oder Handy nutzt, ein Film für so enorme Begeisterung sorgen kann, lässt im Ansatz erahnen, wie revolutionär die ersten bewegten Bilder im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert gewirkt haben müssen. Hierbei steht nicht der technische Aspekt im Vordergrund sondern vielmehr der Zugang und die Wirkung des Mediums auf seine Zuschauer. Jahrhunderts. Unter Einbeziehung vielfältiger, zum Teil unbekannter Materialien der Jahre 1886 bis 1918 zeigt die Arbeit die Anfänge einer bis in die Gegenwart reichenden Einstellungsgeschichte zum Auto auf und bietet zudem Einsichten in die medienspezifische Verarbeitungsweise "automobiler" Erfahrungen. Waren die Literaten bestrebt, Fahrterlebnisse durch Bewegungsmetaphorik, Verknappungen und syntaktische Verschiebungen in adäquate Stilformen umzusetzen, so bezog der Film das Auto als ein unmittelbares künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel ein. Denn mit der Kamerafahrt wurde eine der wesentlichen Gestaltungsformen des Films begründet. Die Untersuchung entfaltet nicht nur die frühe Rezeptionsgeschichte des Autos, sie erhellt auch die mannigfaltigen Bezüge zwischen Film und Literatur zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts.
