Excerpt from Die Neue Erziehung: Essays Uber die Erziehung zur Kunst und zum Leben Zeuxidamus antwortete jemandem, der ihn fragte, warum die Lakedamonier ihre Vorschriften der Tapferkeit nicht schriftlich abfassten und der Jugend zu lesen gaben, es geschahe, um letztere an Thaten und nicht an Worte zu gewoh'nen. Das ist wie fur unsre Zeit geschrieben, die viel zu sehr sich um Worte kummert und viel zu wenig um das Handeln, Thun und Leben. "erkenne dich selbst lernt der Schuler: aber dieses Wort zu kennen nutzt nichts, sondern nur das, was es sagen will, zu konnen, hat Wert. Wenn es nun Sache des blossen Unterrichts ist, das "kennen zu lehren, so ist es Sache der wahren Erziehung, zum "konnen anzuregen: Wir konnen wohl sagen: So spricht Cicero; so han delte Plato; das sind Worte des Aristoteles. Allein was sagen wir selbst? Was urteilen wir? Was thun wir? Jenes konnte ein Papagei ebensogut nachsagen wie wir. Es mag wohl heute Leh rer geben, Welche bei der Lekture der Platonischen Dialoge in der Schulstube den Wert darauf legen, dem - Schuler Schatze fur das Leben mitzugeberi, leuchtende Vorbilder edler Gesinnung, zu demecke, dass der Schuler diesen Vorbildern nacheifert und nachlebt, aber im allgemeinen thut man dies nicht. Man lasst vielmehr die Platonischen Dialoge nur vom philologischen Stand punkte aus lesen. Naturlich muss man, . Ehe man sie lesen kann, die Worter und die Grammatik der Sprache, in der sie geschrie ben sind, gelernt haben: dies aber betrifft nur die Vorstufe und Vorbedingung. Der Zweck der Lekture aber ist, die hohe Moral und Philosophie, welche jene Dialoge darstellen, fur das eigene Leben zu verwerten. Hierauf dies kann ganz unumwunden ausgesprochen werden wird in der Erziehung zu wenig Nach druck gelegt. Wenn man einwenden wurde, dass Jene Moral fur unsere Zeit nicht mehr passe, . So wurde man damit sagen, dass diese ganze Lekture und folglich auch die Erlernung der griechi schen Sprache denn fur grammatikalischen und formellen Un terricht wurde-die Muttersprache auch genugen unnutz sei. In this literary study of memoirs describing at first hand the horrors of German concentration camps, the principal question asked is: How did the survivors find the words to talk about experiences hitherto unknown, even unimaginable? Beyond being a mere analysis of discourse, Narrating the Holocaust reflects the situations in camp that triggered these responses, and shows how the professional authors adapted certain literary genres (e.g. the travel story, the Hassidic tale) to serve as models for communication, while the vast majority who were not trained as writers merely used the form of the report. A comparison between these memoirs and the more frequently discussed camp novel identifies the different narrative strategies by which the two are determined. Most of the 130 texts discussed here were published in German between l934 and the present; some famous Italian, French and Polish texts have also been included for comparison.
