Abstract: "Trotz der vielen Forschungsarbeiten zum Zweiten Weltkrieg stellt der deutsche Historiker Dieter Pohl fest, dass über Griechenlands Rolle noch sehr wenig bekannt ist. Ähnliches gilt auch für die griechische Öffentlichkeit selbst, wo wenig fundiertes Wissen über den Zweiten Weltkrieg und die deutsche Okkupation existiert. Allerdings ändert sich dies derzeit, und ein wachsendes öffentliches Interesse an den Geschichten von Überlebenden ist feststellbar. Aus diesem Grund ist eine Online-Plattform mit griechischen Zeitzeugenberichten der Okkupationszeit besonders sinnvoll, wie sie im Rahmen des Projekts 'Erinnerungen an die Okkupation in Griechenland' aufgebaut wird. Hierfür werden mindestens 70 lebensgeschichtliche Video-Interviews mit griechischen Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen aufgenommen. This edited volume examines a range of historical and contemporary episodes of reconciliation and anti-reconciliation in the aftermath of war. Reconciliation is a concept that resists easy definition. At the same time, it is almost invariably invoked as a goal of post-conflict reconstruction, peacebuilding and transitional justice. This book examines the considerable ambiguity and controversy surrounding the term and, crucially, asks what has reconciliation entailed historically? What can we learn from past episodes of reconciliation and anti-reconciliation? Taken together, the chapters in this volume adopt an interdisciplinary approach, focused on the question of how reconciliation has been enacted, performed and understood in particular historical episodes, and how that might contribute to our understanding of the concept and its practice. Rather than seek a universal definition, the book focuses on what makes each case of reconciliation unique, and highlights the specificity of reconciliation in individual contexts. Since unification, the Federal Republic of Germany has made vaunted efforts to make amends for the crimes of the Third Reich. This edited volume is dedicated to national-socialist archaeology as a Europe-wide phenomenon. It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 1945, these transnational archaeological networks were to prove crucial for the development of national-socialist archaeological policies. This volume will reveal how national-socialist archaeology was to an extent valued positively in its time as highly innovative, even influencing the archaeology of non-occupied countries. Although in the final instance, it generally failed to displace the national archaeologies in Europe, the volume also analyses the long-term impact of national-socialist rule on the development of European archaeology. How did the attempts to create a unified European archaeology after 1945 continue to influence networks, methods and terminologies, institutional structures, or popular representations of the early past?

Complicated Complicity is about the forms taken, motives and spectrum of actions of European collaboration with the Nazis. Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter’s welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience.
