Während Carl Loewes Ballade hoch gepriesen wurde, waren seine "lyrischen" Vertonungen schnell in Vergessenheit geraten. Unter Loewes zahlreichen Vertonungen stellen die durchkomponierten Lieder nach Texten von Goethe einen ganz eigenen und andersartigen Schaffenszweig im OEuvre Loewes dar. Hsiao-Yun Kung widmet sich diesen Liedern schwerpunktmäßig im Rahmen einer ausführlichen musikalischen Analyse und sucht zu klären, in welchem Verhältnis Text und Musik zueinander stehen bzw. voneinander abzuleiten sind. Ein Vergleich mit entsprechenden Vertonungen von Zeitgenossen Loewes (etwa von Repräsentanten der Berliner Liederschule wie Zelter oder Reichardt, aber auch von Franz Schubert) verdeutlicht, dass Loewe mit seinen Goethe-Vertonungen einen ganz eigenen Weg in Sachen Textbehandlung und musikalischer Konzipierung gegangen ist: eine textorientierte, musikalische Deklamation, die mehr dramatisch und gestisch agierend denn lyrisch introvertiert wirkt, macht das Besondere dieser Lieder aus, das nicht nur im Werk Loewes sondern auch in den Liedern seiner Zeitgenossen seinesgleichen sucht.
