Ist die Form des einen oder andern urwüchsigen Hauses ein verlässliches stammes-kennzeichen? Das sind Fragen der modernen Ethnographie und hierauf giebt es vorerst nur eine unsichere Antwort. Forscher, welche ihr Augenmerk auf Hausformen bloss eines beschränkten Gebietes richten, sind rasch mit Behauptungen in dieser Richtung zur Hand. Sie sind geneigt, nationale Kennzeichen in jeder Eigenthümlichkeit derselben zu finden und sie mit nationalen Namen zu belegen; sie übersehen hierbei zuweilen, dass ein Volksstamm, wenn er auch eine gewisse Hausform gebraucht, desshalb noch nicht als geistiger Eigen thümer, als Begründer derselben gelten kann. Die halbcivilisierten Neuseeländer tragen Cylinderhüte und doch wird niemand den Cylinder eine neuseeländische Hutform nennen wollen, weil man eben zufällig die Herkunft dieser Kopfbedeckung kennt. Die An wendung nationaler Benennungen auf Hausformen muss wohl von einem ähnlichen Standpunkte aus beurtheilt werden.
