Seit der Öffnung der ostdeutschen Archive nach 1990 hat sich die französische Forschung zur DDR und den neuen Bundesländern dynamisch entwickelt. Dies ist bisher wegen des Übersetzungsproblems kaum wahrgenommen worden. Nunmehr liegt ein Band auf Deutsch vor, in dem Autoren in einem interdisziplinären und internationalen Rahmen die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit präsentieren. Die französische DDR- und Transformationsforschung ist durch einen eigenen methodischen Ansatz gekennzeichnet, der sich auf die sozialen Akteure, ihre Praktiken, ihre Erfahrungen und ihre Lebenswelt konzentriert, um die Prozesse und Strukturen innerhalb der DDR-Gesellschaft zu rekonstruieren. Dieser sozio-politische Ansatz (socio-histoire) erlaubt es, die ostdeutsche Gesellschaft in ihrer Geschichte und Gegenwart zu 'entnationalisieren' und sie in einem breiten europäischen Rahmen zu diskutieren.

During the Cold War, Britain had an astonishing number of contacts and connections with one of the Soviet Bloc's most hard-line regimes: the German Democratic Republic. The left wing of the British Labour Party and the Trade Unions often had closer ties with communist East Germany than the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). There were strong connections between the East German and British churches, women's movements, and peace movements; influential conservative politicians and the Communist leadership in the GDR had working relationships; and lucrative contracts existed between business leaders in Britain and their counterparts in East Germany. Based on their extensive knowledge of the documentary sources, the authors provide the first comprehensive study of Anglo-East German relations in this surprisingly under-researched field. Eli Rubin takes an innovative approach to consumer culture to explore questions of political consensus and consent and the impact of ideology on everyday life in the former East Germany. Synthetic Socialism explores the history of East Germany through the production and use of a deceptively simple material: plastic. Rubin investigates the connections between the communist government, its Bauhaus-influenced designers, its retooled postwar chemical industry, and its general consumer population. He argues that East Germany was neither a totalitarian state nor a niche society but rather a society shaped by the confluence of unique economic and political circumstances interacting with the concerns of ordinary citizens. To East Germans, Rubin says, plastic was a high-technology material, a symbol of socialism's scientific and economic superiority over capitalism. Most of all, the state and its designers argued, plastic goods were of a particularly special quality, not to be thrown away like products of the wasteful West. Rubin demonstrates that this argument was accepted by the mainstream of East German society, for whom the modern, socialist dimension of a plastics-based everyday life had a deep resonance.

Urn einen Einblick in die Entwicklung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung zur DDR seit 1991 zu geben, werden in einern Dokumentationsteil zwei Recherchen aus den Datenbanken des Informati onszentrums Sozialwissenschaften abgebildet. Diese bibliographische Zusammenstellung ermoglicht dern Nutzer, die Auseinandersetzung wn die DDR-Sozialwissenschaften und ihren Stellen 3 wert im Wissenschaftssystem der DDR naehzuvollziehen . Sach- und Autorenregister erleiehtem den Zugang zu den rund 300 Literaturhinweisen. Die hier vorgestellte Bestandssicherungstatigkeit der GESIS kann Dieht hoch genug veranschlagt werden, denn die Forschung, die durch sie ermoglieht wird, ist Dieht nur fur unser Land bedeutsam.

Im fed up of people starving (Ich habe es satt, dass andere hungern) was the motto of the East German third-world groups. Their aim was to improve the living conditions of people in the economically weak states in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The author traces the development of these developmental initiatives, which mostly emerged in the early 1980s and later, through all the historic changes: in the last decade of the GDR, during the dramatic upheavals in 1989/90 and in the Federal Republic in the 1990s. Against the background of these utterly different political contexts she analyses the concepts, practical work and development of the East German third-world groups. The main focus of the study are the relations of the East German third-world initiatives to their political and social milieu: the Church, the public, other alternative political initiatives, the West German third-world movement and above all the respective state actors.
