Wenn man in der Nacht zum Sternenhimmel aufschaut, so blickt man in eine unendliche Weite. Ist unser Universum tatsächlich unendlich groß? Alles was wir aus unserer Erfahrung kennen ist endlich. Etwas, was eine unendliche Ausdehnung hat, können wir nicht begreifen. Aber auch die Vorstellung eines Weltraums mit endlichem Volumen führt zu Problemen: Das Universum müsste dann einen Rand haben. Wie könnte ein solcher Rand aber aussehen und was liegt hinter der Grenze? Ein weiteres Problem kommt hinzu: Unser Blick in den Himmel ist ein Blick in die Vergangenheit. Das Licht der Sterne hat Tausende von Jahren gebraucht, um uns zu erreichen. Wie sieht der Raum da draußen heute aus? Macht es überhaupt Sinn, von einem heutigen Ereignis auf einem fremden Stern zu sprechen? Vielleicht gibt es den Himmelskörper und den umgebenden Raum gar nicht mehr. Fragen dieser Art beschäftigen Philosophen, Physiker und Mathematiker seit Jahrtausenden. Und obwohl wir inzwischen eine Fülle von Informationen gesammelt haben, gibt es noch keine endgültigen Antworten. Das vorliegende Buch befasst sich mit der Natur von Raum und Raumzeit aus der Sicht eines Mathematikers. Es zeigt, dass die Mathematik Modelle sowohl von endlichen als auch unendlichen Räumen bereitstellt, ohne sich in Widersprüche zu verwickeln. Es beschreibt, dass man mit logischen Mitteln Rückschlüsse sowohl auf die globale Gestalt als auch auf lokale Eigenschaften des Universums ziehen kann, wenn man bestimmte Axiome als wahr annimmt. Das Buch folgt damit der Tradition von Euklid, welcher als erster solche Raum-Axiome in systematischer Weise präzisierte. Ausgehend von der euklidischen Geometrie wird ein Bogen gespannt bis zu den Mannigfaltigkeiten, welche vielen physikalischen Theorien als Basis dienen. Dabei lassen wir uns nicht von der Fragestellung nach der wahren Natur des Raumes leiten, sondern fragen uns: Welche Modelle des Universums sind aus logischer Sicht möglich? So werden wir uns in die Gedankengänge eines zweidimensionalen Wesens hineinversetzen, aber auch erörtern, ob unser Universum die Oberfläche eines vierdimensionalen Torus oder gar ein Dodekaederraum sein könnte. Wir werfen aber auch einen Blick in die moderne Kosmologie und stellen die Frage, welche der Raummodelle einer experimentellen Überprüfung standhalten, und welche Antworten die moderne Physik auf die Natur von Raum und Zeit gibt.

Hermeneutics was elaborated as a specific art of understanding in humanities. The discovered paradigmatic, historical characteristics of scientific knowledge, and the role of rhetoric, interpretation and contextuality enabled us to use similar arguments in natural sciences too. In this way a new research field, the hermeneutics of science emerged based upon the works of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger and Gadamer. Modern molecular technology in the so-called life sciences (biology as weil as medicine) allows today to approach and manipulate living beings in ways and to an extent wh ich not too long aga seemed Utopian. The empirical progress promises further and even more radical developments in the future, and it is at least often claimed that this kind of research will have tremendeous etfects on and for all of humanity, for example in the areas of food production, transplantation medicine (including stem cell research and xenotransplantation), (therapeutic) genetic manipulation and (cell-line) cloning (of cell lines or tissues), and of biodiversity conservation-strategies. At least in Western, industrialized countries the development of modern sciences led to a steady increase of human health, well-being and quality of life. However, with the move to make the human body itself an object of scientific research interests, the respective scientific descriptions resulted in changes in the image that human beings have of themselves. Scientific progress has led to a startling loss of traditional human self-understanding. This development is in contrast to an under standing according to which the question what it means to be "human" is treated in the realm of philosophy. And indeed, a closer look reveals that - without denying the value of scientitic progress - science cannot replace the philosophical approach to anthropological questions.

Kvasz’s book is a contribution to the history and philosophy of mat- matics, or, as one might say, the historical approach to the philosophy of mathematics. This approach is for mathematics what the history and philosophy of science is for science. Yet the historical approach to the philosophy of science appeared much earlier than the historical approach to the philosophy of mathematics. The ?rst signi?cant work in the history and philosophy of science is perhaps William Whewell’s Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences, founded upon their History. This was originally published in 1840, a second, enlarged edition appeared in 1847, and the third edition appeared as three separate works p- lished between 1858 and 1860. Ernst Mach’s The Science of Mech- ics: A Critical and Historical Account of Its Development is certainly a work of history and philosophy of science. It ?rst appeared in 1883, and had six further editions in Mach’s lifetime (1888, 1897, 1901, 1904, 1908, and 1912). Duhem’s Aim and Structure of Physical Theory appeared in 1906 and had a second enlarged edition in 1914. So we can say that history and philosophy of science was a well-established ?eld th th by the end of the 19 and the beginning of the 20 century. By contrast the ?rst signi?cant work in the history and philosophy of mathematics is Lakatos’s Proofs and Refutations, which was p- lished as a series of papers in the years 1963 and 1964.

For skeptics, the best one can hope to achieve is a reasonable suspension of judgment—remaining ever mindful that claims to knowledge require careful scrutiny, thoughtful analysis, and critical review if we are to prevent ourselves and others from plunging headlong into mistaken notions.
