Hierbei spielt es eine wesentliche Rolle, was das Sterben beziehungsweise der Tod für den Betroffenen selbst bedeutet, und wie Menschen aus dessen näherer Umgebung mit diesem Thema umgehen. Der Tod hat in diesem Zusammenhang nicht nur eine Bedeutung für den Sterbenden selbst, sondern kann auch das Leben der Angehörigen auf drastische Weise verändern. So kann der Tod eines Menschen das eigene Selbst- und Weltbild so sehr beeinträchtigen, dass manche Menschen nie über den Verlust hinweg kommen und psychologische Hilfe in Anspruch nehmen müssen. Die durch den Tod eines geliebten Menschen eintretende Veränderung kann mehr oder auch weniger gut verkraftet werden; manche Menschen lernen mit ihrer Trauer umzugehen, andere verbleiben ihr ganzes Leben in einem Zustand tiefer Traurigkeit und Verzweiflung. Der individuelle Trauerprozess eines Menschen stellt die Bewältigung des Verlustes und die Akzeptanz der dadurch hervorgerufenen Veränderung in ihrem eigenen Leben dar. Die Trauer als "psychologischer Prozess von höchster Wichtigkeit für die Gesundheit eines Menschen" (Kast 2006: 8) verläuft bei jedem Menschen unterschiedlich, dessen Bewältigung kann einige Monate, Jahre oder ein ganzes Leben andauern. Trotz dieser Komplexität kann Trauer in unterschiedliche Stufen unterteilt werden, um das Fortschreiten des individuellen Trauerprozesses nachvollziehen zu können. Basierend auf der Arbeit mit Trauerpatienten versucht die Psychologin Verena Kast in ihrem Werk "Zeit der Trauer" eine Darstellung des Trauerprozesses anhand ihres Modells über die unterschiedlichen "Phasen der Trauer" (vgl. Kast 2006: 14ff). Im Folgenden möchte ich dieses Modell auf den individuellen Trauerprozess der Autor
