An extensive scholarly literature, written in the past century holds that in ancient Greek and Roman thought history is understood as circular and repetitive - a consequence of their anti-temporal metaphysics - in contrast with Judaeo-Christian thought, which sees history as linear and unique - a consequence of their messianic and hence radically temporal theology. Gerald Press presents a more general view - that the Graeco-Roman and Judaeo-Christian cultures were fundamentally alien and opposed cultural forces and that, therefore, Christianity's victory over paganism included the replacement or supersession of one intellectual world by another - and then shows that, contrary to this view, there was substantial continuity between "pagan" and Christian ideas of history in antiquity, rather than a striking opposition between cyclic and linear patterns. He finds that the foundation of the Christian view of history as goal-directed lies in the rhetorical rather than the theological motives of early Christian writers.

Der erste Halbband beginnt mit einer Einleitung uber Begriff und Merkmale der hellenistischen Philosophie. Das erste Kapitel ist Epikur und seinem umfassenden philosophischen Lehrgebaude gewidmet, im folgenden Kapitel werden die wichtigsten Vertreter der Schule Epikurs bis zum 1. Jh. v. Chr. vorgestellt. Dank neuer und neu herausgegebener Quellen ist hier ein wirklicher Zuwachs an Wissen zu verzeichnen, so dass die Bedeutung mancher Epikureer fur die weitere Entwicklung der Lehre und ihr Einfluss auf das romische Denken erkennbar werden. Aus diesem Grund wurden viele der nicht immer leicht zuganglichen, teilweise nur fragmentarisch auf Papyrus erhaltenen Schriften der Schuler skizzenhaft zusammengefasst. Es wird deutlich, dass die epikureische Lehre zwar im Kern dogmatisch fest, in den praktischen Anweisungen jedoch durchaus anpassungsfahig war. Der Halbband schliesst mit einem Kapitel uber Lukrez, dem namhaftesten Epikureer Roms, dessen bemerkenswertes Werk 'De rerum natura' Philosophie und Dichtung zu einer eindrucklichen Einheit verbindet und in spaterer Zeit massgeblich fur die Fortwirkung des Epikureismus verantwortlich war. Im zweiten Halbband wird zunachst die Stoa behandelt, die von ihrer Grundung an ein wichtiger Widerpart des Epikureismus war. Die aussere Geschichte der Schule und die sich wandelnde Lehre sind beschrieben bis in die Mitte des 1. Jh. v. Chr., es folgt die Darstellung der 'skeptischen' Richtungen. Pyrrhon aus Elis bestritt die Moglichkeit gesicherter Erkenntnis und empfahl, in konsequenter 'Meinungslosigkeit' zu verharren. Teilweise unter seinem Einfluss vollzog sich in der von Platon gegrundeten Akademie eine Wende: Erkenntnistheoretische Erorterungen traten in den Vordergrund. Hauptgegner der jungeren, 'skeptischen' Akademie waren die 'dogmatischen' Stoiker. Im fruhen 1. Jh. v. Chr. versuchte Antiochos aus Askalon durch die Grundung einer eigenen 'Alten Akademie' eine Ruckwendung zu Platon. Das letzte Kapitel gilt Cicero, bei dem die Faden zusammenlaufen: Er gab seinen Zeitgenossen und damit der Nachwelt den ersten Gesamtuberblick uber die hellenistische Philosophie; seine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der griechischen Schulphilosophie fuhrte ihn zu einer eigenen, sehr personlichen Version der akademischen Skepsis
