Continuity, quantum, continuum, and dialectic are foundational logics of Western historical thought. The historiographical method to discern them is a critique of historical reason. Through 'stylistics' Mark E. Blum demonstrates how the inner temporal experience of the person shapes both judgment and historical action. Blum's work augments the epistemology of Immanuel Kant, Wilhelm Dilthey, and Edmund Husserl. Elaborating on this project immediately raises the problem of institutional differentiation, which characterizes multicultural society. Does the variety of educational institutions not, by definition, exclude the shared conception and realization of adulthood that is presupposed by German Idealism? This book shows that German Idealism can still participate in the contemporary debate on education: it is not only helpful in raising relevant questions, but can also be transformed into positions which can deal with the pluriformity that characterizes contemporary society.

Während die bisherige Forschung überwiegend auf Rekonstruktion und Analyse des philosophischen und pädagogischen Werkes von Theodor Litt bezogen war, konzentrieren sich gegenwärtige Untersuchungen bedingt durch die Zunahme von Archivöffnungen zunehmend auf unerschlossene historische Problemstellungen. Eine solche Fragestellung ist für die vorliegende Untersuchung kennzeichnend. Auf der Grundlage einer Analyse der aktuellen Forschungsdiskussion sowie einer Übersicht über den im Nachlaß enthalte-nen Manuskriptbestand werden Schwerpunkte der Kultur- und Geschichtsphilosophie, sowie der Bildungsphilosophie und Philosophiegeschichte aufgezeigt, die Theodor Litt in seinen an der Universität Leipzig gehaltenen Vorlesungen entwickelt hat. Dabei wird zu-nächst eine Fragestellung verfolgt, welche die einzelnen Themenstellungen in den Gesamtzusammenhang seiner Denkentwicklung stellt und die in den Manuskripten enthaltenen Bezüge zu Schriften zeitgenössischer Denker erfaßt. Sodann wird ein Vergleich der einzelnen Manuskripte mit den veröffentlichten Schriften vorgenommen, der die werkgeschichtliche Bedeutung der Vorlesungstexte bestimmt. Eine Gewichtung der in den Vorlesungsmanuskripten enthaltenen Bezüge zur gegenwärtigen Diskussion beschließt den Band. Das zen-trale Kriterium für die Auswahl der behandelten Vorlesungsmanuskripte besteht in dem inhaltlichen Bezug zu den publizierten Schriften Litts. Es wurden nur solche Manuskripte ausgewählt, in denen die in seinen Schriften entwickelten Ansätze weitergeführt oder vari-iert werden und die neue Einsichten in die Entwicklung seines Denkweges erschließen. Dies trifft vor allem für die in der Leipziger Zeit entstandenen Vorlesungsmanuskripte von Theodor Litt zu, die Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung sind.
