Mit der Verbreitung des Buchdrucks hat sich die Quantität des verfügbaren Wissens radikal verändert, woraus sich neue Fragen nach der Funktion des Wissens, seiner Ordnung und den Möglichkeiten seiner Bewahrung und Tradierung ergeben. Die überlieferten Wissensspeicher werden allmählich den veränderten Ansprüchen angepasst, und seit dem 17. Jahrhundert entstehen daneben neue Formen der Wissenserschließung und -vermittlung, mit denen auf die Anforderungen der Universitäten, Bibliotheken und Verwaltungen, aber auch auf die Interessen eines nicht-akademischen Lesepublikums reagiert wird. Die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der frühneuzeitlichen Wissensaufbereitung und der daraus hervorgehenden Speicherformen (zwischen 1500 und 1800) werden in eine vergleichende Perspektive gerückt: Die jeweiligen Formen werden zunächst nach einheitlichen Gesichtspunkten vorgestellt, um dann nach Überschneidungen und Abgrenzungen, nach Konstanten und Transformationen fragen zu können. Die Untersuchung greift ein in der buchistorischen Forschung bisher vernachlässigtes Phänomen auf: die zentrale Bedeutung der deutschen Buchdrucker im 15. Jahrhundert für den entstehenden französischen Buchmarkt. Aber sie leistet mehr als die bloße Darstellung einer besonderen Gruppe von Akteuren. Auf der Basis zahlreicher Quellen gelingt es der Autorin, die spezifischen Lebenswege der Drucker in Verbindung zu bringen mit den ökonomischen und kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen, unter denen sich die Buchproduktion vollzog. Sie gelangt so zu aussagekräftigen Erkenntnissen über den Medienwandel in der Inkunabelzeit: Die Frühgeschichte des Buchdrucks ist keine geradlinige Erfolgsgeschichte, sondern vielmehr ein komplexer Innovationsprozess, an dessen Ende die Ablösung von der Handschrift durch den Buchdruck steht. Hierbei kommen sowohl bedeutende Druckereien wie die von Johannes Heynlin von Stein und Guillaume Fichet gegründete Pariser Offizin als auch kleine, weitgehend unbeachtet gebliebene Pressen wie diejenige von Johann Walther in Moûtiers zur Darstellung, was den besonderen Reiz dieser umfassenden Untersuchung ausmacht.

Since 1971, the International Congress for Neo-Latin Studies has been organised every three years in various cities in Europe and North America. In August 2012, Münster in Germany was the venue of the fifteenth Neo-Latin conference, held by the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies. This volume brings together key findings of the long-term research project ‘Religious Individualisation in Historical Perspective’ (Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt University). Combining a wide range of disciplinary approaches, methods and theories, the volume assembles over 50 contributions that explore and compare processes of religious individualisation in different religious environments and historical periods, in particular in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe from antiquity to the recent past. Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios.
