The fourth volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress “The Many Languages of Comparative Literature” includes articles that study thematic and formal elements of literary texts. Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. Another feature shared by most of the articles is the tendency of ‘undeclared thematology’, which not only reflects the persistence of the charge of positivism, but also shows that most scholars prefer to locate themselves within more specific, often interdisciplinary fields of literary study. In this sense, this volume does not only prove the ongoing relevance of traditional fields such as rhetoric and thematology, but provides contributions to currently flourishing research areas, among them literary multilingualism, literature and emotions, and ecocriticism.

Ecce Homo Bilingual English German Edition written by Friedrich Nietzsche and has been published by Newcomb Livraria Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Philosophy categories.

A new 2023 translation into American English with a new introduction, translated directly from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1889 Ecce Homo. This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 10 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. Ecce Homo is the closest to an autobiography from Nietzsche. It is a deeply personal, introspective work reflecting on his life and philosophy shortly before his descent into madness and death the next year. It serves as a summation of his philosophy and a personal autobiography. The title, which translates to "Behold the Man," references the moment in the Bible when Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the crowd prior to his crucifixion. Nietzsche uses this phrase to reflect on his own life and philosophy, positioning himself as a Christ-like figure who has suffered for the sake of humanity. It is a work of staggering megalomania, foreshadowing his psychotic break. One of the key themes in the book is the idea of the "superman," or "Übermensch," which Nietzsche describes as "the meaning of my Zarathustra." He argues that the traditional values of Christianity and morality are holding humanity back from reaching its full potential and that individuals must transcend these values to become a "superman" and achieve true greatness. In the book, he writes, "I teach you the Superman. Man is something that shall be overcome."

“The object of last night is a comet”. This note made by Caroline Herschel (1750-1848) in her diary on 2 August 1786 documents the defining moment in her life when she began to rise above the insignificance of most contemporary women into the ascendant world of science. Raised by her mother to be a seamstress and without formal education, she was encouraged by her father to practise music. But it was her brother William (1738-1822), who took her with him to his home in the southern English city of Bath in 1772 who offered the cheerful young woman a successful career. ‘Memoir and Correspondence of Caroline Herschel’, published in London and New York in 1876 and in German translation in 1877, contains diary entries and letters written by the famous astronomer. The author gives a lively and exact account of her childhood in Hanover and her journey to England to keep house for her brothers William and Alexander, who worked as musicians but were interested in astronomy and built telescopes in their spare time. Caroline helped William in his regular observations of the sky at night, transcribing and organising his data during the day. In 1781 her brother discovered the planet Uranus and in 1782 was appointed Astronomer Royal. On the discovery of her first comet – there would be seven more – Caroline received a permanent royal grant. After William’s death she revised his and her own works and was honoured for this by being elected to various learned societies. As a result of her fame she met and corresponded with important figures of the time such as Carl Friedrich Gauss, Alexander von Humboldt and the violinist and composer Paganini.

Reception Of British Aesthetics In Germany written by Heiner F. Klemme and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-06-15 with Philosophy categories.

The transfer of intellectual ideas between European countries during the period known as the Enlightenment was largely dependent upon the abilities of translators and philosophers, who had to convey and make comprehensible, complex and new ideas expressed in one language to those who thought and wrote in another. Often, they had to invent or conceive a completely new terminology to express what the British authors intended to say. That many of the terms they introduced are now part of common German is a sign of their abilities. It was through endeavours of men like Spalding, Mylius and Resewitz that Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, Hogarth, Hume, Burke and Gerard's aesthetic ideas found followers and critics away from home. With the new introductions these texts, which are often even rarer than the original English editions, will further our understanding of the dissemination of aesthetics and philosophy within the German tradition of the European Enlightenment. Sulzer, Lessing, Mendelssohn, Kant, Herder, Goethe und Schiller, for instance, cannot be understood without the pioneering work of these translators. Furthermore, since they had a significant influence on the aesthetic vocabulary of eighteenth and nineteenth-century German aesthetics in general, they are also important for the further development of that discipline in Germany.
