Excerpt from Die Romische Curie Und Das Concil Von Trient Unter Pius IV, Vol. 1: Actenstucke Zur Geschichte Des Concils Von Trient, Im Auftrage Der Historischen Commission Der Kaiserlichen Akademie Der Wissenschaften Das Concil von Trient hat ungeachtet seiner unwandelbaren Be deutung fur die romische Kirche nicht immer die gleiche Rolle in der Erinnerung der Menschen gespielt: es hat bald im Vordergrunde der Geschehnisse des 16. Jahrhunderts und bald wieder im Hintergrunde und es hat hier wie dort in verschiedener Beleuchtung gestanden. Letzteres um se mehr, als von seinem Verlaufe dic Mitlebenden und vollends die nachfolgenden Geschleehter nur ungeniigende und unsichere Kunde hatten. Der Ausspruch, den Ranke vor 70 Jahren getkan hat, dass wir noch keine wahre Geschichte des Concils besitzen, gilt noch heute. I'iigte er aber hineu, dass, da diese Sachen ihr Interesse sehr vertoren haben, es kaum noch eu dem Unternehmen, solche Geschichte zu schreiben, kommen werde, se ging er von Voraussetzungen aus, welche sich als falsch erwiesen haben, und unterscha'tetc insbesondere die religio's politische Bewegung, welche, damals bereits im Anenge, binnen Kurzem mdchtig wurde. Indem in dieser auch die Decrete des Tridentinums starker denn euvor betont wurden, richtete sich auch das Augenmerk der Historiker wieder mehr auf die Geschichte des Concils. Da es um dieselbe Zeit geschah, dass die Archive und Bibliotheken weiter ge ofinct und eifriger durchforscht wurden, achtete und fahndete man jetzt auch auf Quellen zur Geschichte des Concils. So war man geriistet, als einige Jahrzehnte spitter die Kunde von der Einberufung eines neuen o'kumenischcn Concils das Interesse fiir das letztvorausgegangene gewaltig steigerte, und schritt schnell dazu fort, was man ebm gefunden, eum Gemeingute zu machen. W'a'hrend im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahr hunderts das Erscheinen der von Mendham besorgten Ausgabe der Acta eoncilii des Palcotto ganz vereinzelt geblieben war, folgten seit 1869 in Italien, Deutschland und Frankreich raseh aufeinander zahl reiche Publicationen verwandtm Inhalts.
