Hier hatten sich die Bäume bis zum höchsten Punkt vorgekämpft, zu dem sie fähig waren, und hier hielten sie inne, ein Gewirr von zwergenhaften Veteranen, vielleicht eineinhalb Meter hoch und fünf Jahrhunderte alt. Fichten, Zwergkiefern, Kunstweiden und ein paar andere Arten bildeten diese Vorhut. Die Linie zog sich in gleichmäßiger Höhe auf beiden Seiten des Reiters hin. Kein Strauch wich vor der Phalanx zurück, denn die Stürme hätten ihn in einer einzigen Saison zu Tode gepflügt.
