It is estimated that only a small fraction, less than 1 per cent, of ancient literature has survived to the present day. The role of Christian authorities in the active suppression and destruction of books in Late Antiquity has received surprisingly little sustained consideration by academics. In an approach that presents evidence for the role played by Christian institutions, writers and saints, this book analyses a broad range of literary and legal sources, some of which have hitherto been little studied. Paying special attention to the problem of which genres and book types were likely to be targeted, the author argues that in addition to heretical, magical, astrological and anti-Christian books, other less obviously subversive categories of literature were also vulnerable to destruction, censorship or suppression through prohibition of the copying of manuscripts. These include texts from materialistic philosophical traditions, texts which were to become the basis for modern philosophy and science. This book examines how Christian authorities, theologians and ideologues suppressed ancient texts and associated ideas at a time of fundamental transformation in the late classical world.

In the Middle Ages, textual amulets--short texts written on parchment or paper and worn on the body--were thought to protect the bearer against enemies, to heal afflictions caused by demonic invasions, and to bring the wearer good fortune. In Binding Words, Don C. Skemer provides the first book-length study of this once-common means of harnessing the magical power of words. Textual amulets were a unique source of empowerment, promising the believer safe passage through a precarious world by means of an ever-changing mix of scriptural quotations, divine names, common prayers, and liturgical formulas. Although theologians and canon lawyers frequently derided textual amulets as ignorant superstition, many literate clergy played a central role in producing and disseminating them. The texts were, in turn, embraced by a broad cross-section of Western Europe. Saints and parish priests, physicians and village healers, landowners and peasants alike believed in their efficacy. Skemer offers careful analysis of several dozen surviving textual amulets along with other contemporary medieval source materials. In the process, Binding Words enriches our understanding of popular religion and magic in everyday medieval life.

This is the definitive study of John Tradescant the elder and his son, two remarkable men who traveled to new or little-known lands in search of botanical treasures--John the elder to Russia, the Near East, and North Africa, and John the younger to the new colony of Virginia. They worked for a series of eminent patrons including Robert Cecil, the Duke of Buckingham, and Charles I, for whom they supervised the creation of some of the great gardens of the period. Identifying the varieties of plants which were first grown by the Tradescants or introduced to the country by one of them, this study also features extensive appendices reproducing the complete texts of the Tradescants' lists of plants as well as the Musaeum Tradescantianum, the younger Tradescants' catalog of the museum collection. Each plant is identified with its modern botanical name, making this an essential work for all those interested in the history of gardening and British plants.

Spirit In Philosophy written by Catarina Belo and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-30 with Philosophy categories.

Catarina Belo explores the question of spirit in the history of philosophy and in various philosophical disciplines, highlighting its meaning and significance for Thomas Aquinas, George Berkeley, and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, among other major figures. Belo argues that some of the traditional arguments concerning God, reason, and our knowledge of the world are shared by these philosophers, culminating but not ending in Hegel. In addition, she defends a kind of idealism that is not incompatible with realism. The book assumes the form a lively dialogue between a student and a teacher—following the literary tradition in philosophy that begins with Plato. The question of the spirit and its varied meanings are examined philosophically from a historical and a conceptual perspective.

The Boggerslosh, the Crunk, and the Dawbis; the Ippagoggy, the Jelbislup, and the Kwongdzu; the Scrug, the Twibbit, and the Ulp—each strange and wonderful zoomate displays its own primary characteristic, described in Gorey's inimitable, droll, rhyming couplets.A writer and artist with an instantly recognizable style, Gorey (American, 1925–2000) created over one hundred works and was also a playwright, an award-winning set and costume designer, and the creator of the animated introduction to the PBS series Mystery! First published in 1967, The Utter Zoo is a favorite of Gorey fans, young and old alike—no matter how well they know their ABCs.
