Es war schon eine abenteuerliche Geschichte, die mich zur Erfüllung des Vermächtnisses des Kapitäns Carl Carlszoon brachte. Da spielen Geister aus der Vergangenheit, meine Entführung in das Amsterdam des 17. Jahrhunderts und nicht zuletzt die Begegnung mit dem mysteriösen 'Traumgott der großen Katze' eine wichtige Rolle. Und immer wieder strich wie zufällig ein roter Kater durch meine phantastischen Erlebnisse, die von allzu misstrauischen Lesern zweifellos als Seemannsgarn abgetan werden könnten. Wie dem auch sei, die Abenteuer des legendären Schiffskaters Rotbart, von denen ich nach sorgfältiger Recherche und unter Hinzuziehung lange verschollener historischer Dokumente in diesem Buch eine kleine Auswahl vorstelle, dürften dem mit der Schiffskatzenwelt bislang nicht allzu vertrauten Leser ebenfalls ein wenig wundersam erscheinen. Insbesondere, wenn es um Klabautermiezen, japanische Gespensterkatzen oder beispielsweise um Heldentaten geht, durch die die Katzen ihre zweibeinige Mannschaft vor dem sicheren Untergang bewahrt haben. Aber ich darf versichern, fast nichts davon ist erfunden, nur wenig über Gebühr ausgeschmückt und nahezu alles mit historischen Dokumenten belegt.

Der unbekannten Schiffskatze Wenn Katz nicht wär an Schiffes Borde, obsieget hätt die Nagerhorde über der Schifffahrt neue Zeiten. Und auch der Mannschaften Moral hätt' ohne Katz an Bord total gelitten in der Meere Weiten. Drum wisset, ohne hilf der Katzen und ihrer unermüdlich Tatzen wär Christoph ohne jede Frage, erlegen wohl der Nagerplage, hätt sich Cook der James wohl kaum genähert Südens Pol, hätten Spaniens stolze Schiffe nie erreicht die Neuweltriffe, wär wohl auch der Franzis Drake abgesoffen in der Lake der unermesslich Wasserwüste. So müsste man dem unbekannten Schiffskater samt seinen Verwandten errichten voller Dankbarkeit ein Denkmal möglichst groß und breit. Sonst machts ja auch ne Büste 40 Portraits legendärer Schiffsfelinen, die im Auftrage der Catmiralität auf den Weltmeeren unterwegs waren
