Die S„kularisation von 1803 war ein Prozess mit dauerhaften Folgen, die selbst ber 200 Jahre sp„ter noch immer kontrovers diskutiert werden. Durch den Reichsdeputationshauptschluss vom 25. Februar 1803, der Ende April des Jahres durch kaiserliche Ratifikation in Kraft trat, begann die revolution„re Umgestaltung der traditionellen, territorialen und politischen Strukturen. Die Paragraphen 35 und 36 bildeten die rechtliche Grundlage fr die ?in Rastatt und Lun‚ville getroffenen Vorentscheidungen? fr die bis dahin gr”áte territoriale Umw„lzung in Deutschland. 112 rechtsrheinische Reichsst„nde, 19 Reichsbistmer, 44 Reichsabteien, 41 Reichsst„dte, viele hundert lands„ssige Abteien, Stifte und Kl”ster sowie alle Reichsd”rfer wurden in der Folge mediatisiert und gingen in hoheits- und eigentumsrechtlicher Hinsicht an weltliche Frsten. Insgesamt wechselte eine Fl„che von etwa 73.000 Quadratkilometern geistlichen Staatsgebiets, wovon Bayern fast 10.000 Quadratkilometer ausmachte, in die Herrschaft weltlicher Territorialstaaten. Natrlich waren von dieser Herrschaftsumschichtung, die sich bis 1806 hinzog, beachtliche Teile der Bev”lkerung des Deutschen Reichs betroffen. Nach Franz Quarthal wechselten ungef„hr 3,2 Millionen Menschen von den rund 21 Millionen Einwohnern des Reiches die Staatsangeh”rigkeit. Von der Mediatisierung war eine noch h”here Zahl betroffen.

The Emancipation of Europe's Muslims traces how governments across Western Europe have responded to the growing presence of Muslim immigrants in their countries over the past fifty years. Drawing on hundreds of in-depth interviews with government officials and religious leaders in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Morocco, and Turkey, Jonathan Laurence challenges the widespread notion that Europe’s Muslim minorities represent a threat to liberal democracy. He documents how European governments in the 1970s and 1980s excluded Islam from domestic institutions, instead inviting foreign powers like Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Turkey to oversee the practice of Islam among immigrants in European host societies. But since the 1990s, amid rising integration problems and fears about terrorism, governments have aggressively stepped up efforts to reach out to their Muslim communities and incorporate them into the institutional, political, and cultural fabrics of European democracy. The Emancipation of Europe’s Muslims places these efforts--particularly the government-led creation of Islamic councils--within a broader theoretical context and gleans insights from government interactions with groups such as trade unions and Jewish communities at previous critical junctures in European state-building. By examining how state-mosque relations in Europe are linked to the ongoing struggle for religious and political authority in the Muslim-majority world, Laurence sheds light on the geopolitical implications of a religious minority’s transition from outsiders to citizens. This volume is the first detailed survey of libraries in Britain and Ireland up to the Civil War. It traces the transition from collections of books without a fixed local habitation to the library, chiefly of printed books, much as we know it today. It examines changing patterns in the formation of book collections in the earlier medieval period, traces the combined impact of the activities of the mendicant orders and the scholarship of the universities in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and the adoption of the library room and the growth of private book collections in the fourteenth and fifteenth. The volume then focuses upon the dispersal of the monastic libraries in the mid-sixteenth centuries, the creation of new types of library, and finally, the steps whereby the collections amassed by antiquaries came to form the bases of the national and institutional libraries of Britain and Ireland.
