Zur Kultur- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte gehort die bewusste Zerstorung, die Uberformung von Strukturen, Bauwerken und Objekten von symbolischer, politischer oder religioser Bedeutung mit dem Ziel der Identitatsstorung. Der Umgang mit den zerstorten Gebauden und Strukturen spiegelt die Absicht, neue Identitaten zu schaffen bzw. an fruhere anzuknupfen. Das Phanomen der Zerstorung symboltrachtiger Bauten und der Umgang mit ihnen sowie der sie umgebenden Strukturen ist in gleicher Weise von Sprach- und Begrifflosigkeit gekennzeichnet. So wie der Begriff "Ikonoklasmus" fur den Bereich der Kunstobjekte genutzt wird, fragt sich, ob der Begriff "Schleifung" fur den zerstorerischen Umgang mit historisch-politischen Baudenkmalern zutreffend ware. Anhand von Beispielen aus Deutschland und Polen hat diese Fragen ein Workshop im Deutschen Historischen Museum untersucht. Polen und Deutschland bieten sich nicht nur wegen der nachbarschaftlichen Nahe an, sondern insbesondere wegen der Vergleichbarkeit von Gemeinsamkeiten und Gegensatzen in der Zerstorung und im Umgang mit dem Zerstorten. Experten aus beiden Landern stellen Beispiele des Abrisses und des Wiederaufbaus historischer Bauten und Ensembles heraus und diskutieren, ob sich aus Ahnlichkeiten der Entwicklungen definitorische Typisierungen beschreiben lassen.

Essays looking at heritage practices and the construction of the past, along with how they can be used to build a national identity. The preservation of architectural monuments has played a key role in the formation of national identities from the nineteenth century to the present. The task of maintaining the collective memories and ideas of a shared heritage often focused on the historic built environment as the most visible sign of a link with the past. The meaning of such monuments and sites has, however, often been the subject of keen dispute: whose heritage is being commemorated, by whom and for whom? The answers to such questions are not always straightforward, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, the recent history of which has been characterized by territorial disputes, the large-scale movement of peoples, and cultural dispossession. This volume considers the dilemmas presented by the recent and complex histories of European states such as Germany, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Examining the effect ofthe destruction of buildings by war, the loss of territories, or the "unwanted" built heritage of the Communist and Nazi regimes, the contributors examine how architectural and urban sites have been created, destroyed, or transformed, in the attempt to make visible a national heritage. This book presents for the first time a panorama of about 85 neo-latin epics composed in France during the 16th and 17th centuries; the collection includes historical, biblical and hagiographic poems, ranging from a few hundred to thirty thousand hexameters. A full account is given of the contents and composition of every poem, the historical, biblical and hagiographic background is explored, and the poets' debt to classical poetry is analyzed with as a clear result the growing influence of Vergil and, during the 17th century, of Tasso as well. How a German city became Polish after World War II With the stroke of a pen at the Potsdam Conference following the Allied victory in 1945, Breslau, the largest German city east of Berlin, became the Polish city of Wroclaw. Its more than six hundred thousand inhabitants—almost all of them ethnic Germans—were expelled and replaced by Polish settlers from all parts of prewar Poland. Uprooted examines the long-term psychological and cultural consequences of forced migration in twentieth-century Europe through the experiences of Wroclaw's Polish inhabitants. In this pioneering work, Gregor Thum tells the story of how the city's new Polish settlers found themselves in a place that was not only unfamiliar to them but outright repellent given Wroclaw's Prussian-German appearance and the enormous scope of wartime destruction. The immediate consequences were an unstable society, an extremely high crime rate, rapid dilapidation of the building stock, and economic stagnation. This changed only after the city's authorities and a new intellectual elite provided Wroclaw with a Polish founding myth and reshaped the city's appearance to fit the postwar legend that it was an age-old Polish city. Thum also shows how the end of the Cold War and Poland's democratization triggered a public debate about Wroclaw's "amputated memory." Rediscovering the German past, Wroclaw's Poles reinvented their city for the second time since World War II. Uprooted traces the complex historical process by which Wroclaw's new inhabitants revitalized their city and made it their own.
