A study based on a sequence of discussion groups held between January-March 1992 in Frankfurt with former German resistance fighters of different political and religious backgrounds, examining their attitude towards the persecution and annihilation of the Jews in the Holocaust at the time. States that although the topic was a focal point in Nazi politics, it occupied no central place in the resistance. Presents excerpts from the discussion groups, relating also the experiences of some of them with Jewish prisoners in concentration camps, latent antisemitism, failed rescue actions, experiences of fear, etc. Argues that, throughout the discussion, the notion of "resistance" remains vague vis-à-vis the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios. In 1949 Bavaria was not only the largest and best known but also the poorest, most agricultural, and most industrially backward region of Germany. It was further its most politically conservative region. The largest political party in Bavaria was the Christian Social Union (CSU), an extremely conservative, even reactionary, regional party. In the ensuing twenty years, the leaders of the CSU's small liberal wing (in particular Franz Josef Strauss, long-time party chair and the most colorful and polarizing politician in postwar Germany) broke with the anti-industrial traditions of Bavarian Catholic politics and made themselves useful to industry. With tactical brilliance the politicians pursued their individual political ambitions, rather than a coherent modernization strategy, which, by 1969, had turned Bavaria into a prosperous Land, the center of Germany's new aerospace, defense, and energy industries, with a disproportionate share of its research institutes.
