Life Intense written by Tristan Garcia and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-13 with Philosophy categories.

Our lives today are oppressed by the demand that we live, feel and experience with ever greater intensity. We are enticed to try exotic flavors and smells; urged to enjoy a wide range of sexual experiences; pushed to engage in extreme sports and recreational drugs - all in the pursuit of some new, unheard-of intensity.Tristan Garcia argues that such intensity rarely lives up to its promise. It always comes at a price: one that defines the ethical predicament of contemporary life. The notion of intensity was the hidden key to Garcia's landmark book Form and Object. In The Life Intense, the first part of his ambitious Letting Be trilogy, he begins to develop it in detail. This first book focuses on ethics; the forthcoming volumes will be devoted to politics and then metaphysics.

Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? How do blockages in the flow of rivers and underground springs interrupt the intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge and hence the ability of local communities to construct collective identities rooted in a sense of place?

This volume marks a further step in the tedious but indispensable task, on which I have long been engaged, of providing materials for a history of Sufism, and more especially for the study of its development in the oldest period, beginning with the second and ending with the fourth century of Islam. A list of the titles know to us of mystical books written during these three hundred years would occupy several pages, but the books themselves have mostly perished, although the surviving remnant includes some important works on various branches of Sufistic theory and practice by leaders of the movement. IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a facsimile reprint of the original. The document has been tailored for better presentation however It may contain imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages. A Woman S Prison Journal written by Luise Rinser and has been published by Schocken Books Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

"In 1944, the young writer Luise Rinser - who was neither Jewish nor Communist - was denounced by a 'friend', arrested for high treason, and sent to the women's prison at Traunstein in Bavaria. This book is the diary she kept, secretly, while she awaited an almost certain death sentence. Besides being an eloquent testament to the strength of the human spirit, it is a fascinating document of prison life under the Nazis - a world which, for all its harshness, was vastly different from the forced labor camps and the death camps."--Jacket.
