Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 12, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung der französischen Mode – hauptsächlich der höfischen Mode – im 17. Jahrhundert und zu Zeiten Ludwig XIV. Bezug wird dabei auf die Selbstinszenierung und Selbstdarstellung des absolutistischen Herrschers genommen. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es nicht sein, eine detailgetreue Darstellung der Mode im Barock zu liefern, vielmehr soll ihre Aussage interpretiert werden. Das Äußere eines Menschen - und so auch seine Kleidung - ist immer auch ein Kommunikationsmittel und gibt Informationen über die religiösen Wurzeln, soziale Herkunft, finanzielle Beschaffenheit und den individuellen Geschmack. Folgend wird die Bedeutung der Mode in vielerlei Hinsichten und auf den Aspekt, dass Mode als Mittel zur politischen und wirtschaftlichen Einflussnahme dient, analysiert. Hierbei wird zunächst eine kurze Einleitung zur Mode des 17. Jahrhunderts gegeben und auf die Kleiderordnungen und deren Zweck eingegangen. Daraufhin wird die höfische Herren- und Damenmode analysiert und interpretiert und das Anliegen der Kleider im Barock erläutert. Im Anschluss werden die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Aspekte der französischen Mode dargelegt. Besonders fiel mein Augenmerk beim Erstellen meiner Hausarbeit auf Erika Thiels „Geschichte des Kostüms“, und auf das Werk von Peter Burke über das Leben Ludwig XIV. Das Staatsportrait nimmt hier eine wichtige Rolle ein und wird im Hinblick auf die zuvor genannten Werke beleuchtet und Rückschlüsse auf das Leben und Wirken Ludwigs XIV. gezogen.

Ich werde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit keinen Aus- bzw. Rückblick über die Entwicklung der Mode geben, sondern mich auf den Ist-Zustand im Zeitalter Ludwig XIV. beschränken. Meine Intention ist es nicht, eine detaillierte Darstellung der barocken Mode vorzulegen, sondern auf ihre Besonderheiten und Hintergründe ein-zugehen. Ziel soll es daher sein, die Kleider nicht nur zu beschreiben, sondern ihre Aussage zu deuten, denn das Äußere eines Menschen inklu-sive seiner Kleidung ist auch immer Kommunikationsträger und kann Informationen über seine soziale Stellung, finanzielle Situation, individuellen Geschmack oder Gemütszustand liefern. Ich werde im Folgenden die Bedeutung der Kleidung bei der Repräsentation der höfischen Hierarchien, des allgemeinen Standes, des Reichtums, der Macht und des Ansehens analysieren und weiterhin den Aspekt von Mode als Instrument politischer und wirtschaftlicher Einflussnahme untersuchen. Meine Vorgehensweise hierbei ist es, vorweg eine knappe Einführung zur Mode der Zeit zu geben, anschließend das Anliegen der barocken Kleider und den Zweck von Kleiderordnungen zu erläutern. Hernach werde ich die politische und die wirtschaftliche Seite der französischen Mode darlegen und von der Bindung des Adels durch dieselbige berich-ten. Vor meiner Abschlussbetrachtung werde ich noch kurz einige Briefe von Liselotte von der Pfalz und ihre darin geäußerten „deutschen Ansichten“ zu der französischen Mode untersuchen.

Should governments save people from themselves? Do governments have the right to influence citizens' behavior related to smoking tobacco, eating too much, not saving enough, drinking alcohol, or taking marijuana—or does this create a nanny state, leading to infantilization, demotivation, and breaches in individual autonomy? Looking at examples from both sides of the Atlantic and around the world, Government Paternalism examines the justifications for, and the prevalence of, government involvement and considers when intervention might or might not be acceptable. Building on developments in philosophy, behavioral economics, and psychology, Julian Le Grand and Bill New explore the roles, boundaries, and responsibilities of the government and its citizens. Le Grand and New investigate specific policy areas, including smoking, saving for pensions, and assisted suicide. They discuss legal restrictions on risky behavior, taxation of harmful activities, and subsidies for beneficial activities. And they pay particular attention to "nudge" or libertarian paternalist proposals that try to change the context in which individuals make decisions so that they make the right ones. Le Grand and New argue that individuals often display "reasoning failure": an inability to achieve the ends that they set themselves. Such instances are ideal for paternalistic interventions—for though such interventions might impinge on autonomy, the impact can be outweighed by an improvement in well-being. Government Paternalism rigorously considers whether the state should guide citizen decision making in positive ways and if so, how this should be achieved.

First published in 2000. Letters from Turkey, considered the best Hun,garian prose of the eighteenth century, is written by Kelemen Mikes, a Transylvanian nobleman who went into exile with Ferenc Rakoczi II, the Prince of Transylvania, after the War of Independence in 1704 - 1711 in which the Prince fought to preserve independent Transylvania. The Prince and his entourage spent some years in France, and were then invited to Turkey by Sultan Ahmed III, going there in 1717. Some of the party eventually left, but, like Rakoczi, Mikes spent the rest of life in exile in Turkey. This memoir had a considerable vogue in Transylvania at the time, and Mikes writes in a well-established tradition. The 207 letters, never before translated from Hungarian, were addressed over some forty years to an aunt in Constantinople. In them, Mikes speaks of the Hungarians' daily life, their hopes and disappointments, and of current events in Turkey and beyond; he describes the deaths of some of the party including that of the Prince himself. He also gives an account of a military campaign along the Danube and an embassy to Moldova, ranging over religious, historical and philosophical topics and recounting numerous anecdotes. All the while his patriotic feelings never leave him, nor does his affection, not unblinkered, for his Prince. The last letter, written four years before his death, sees him become head of the Hungarian community in Turkey, last survivor of the original band of Transylvanian nobles exiled to a far country.
