Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Amerika, Note: 2,0, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald (Historische Institut), Veranstaltung: Geschichte Brasiliens, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Als am 22.April 1500 Pedro Alvares Cabral mit seiner Flotte auf der Suche nach einem westlichen Seeweg nach Indien südlich von Bahia landete, konnte noch niemand ahnen, dass Cabral so eben die später größte Kolonie Portugals, Brasilien, die sich im weiteren Verlauf der Geschichte noch zum Kaiserreich entwickeln sollte, offiziell für die portugiesische Krone in Anspruch genommen hatte. Da der Fokus der Portugiesen im frühen 16. Jahrhundert dem indischen und südostasiatischen Raum und dem dortigen Handel galt, fand Brasilien zunächst wenig Beachtung. Brasilien, das seinen Namen dem reichen Vorkommen an Brasilholz, einem Färbholz, das zur Herstellung von Purpur- und Scharlachstoffen diente und in Europa sehr gefragt war, verdankt, wurde zunächst in kolonialer Tradition nur als Seestützpunkt nach Ostindien gesehen und stellte anfangs den unbedeutendsten Teil des weltumspannenden Handelsimperiums dar. Erst mit der Zurückdrängung Portugals aus dem Pazifik verschob sich die Interessenlage auf den südamerikanischen Kontinent und Brasilien wurde zu einer königlichen Kolonie. Hatte die Monopolisierung des Farbholzhandels noch keine ernsthafte wirtschaftliche Erschließung zur Folge, begann diese mit dem großflächigen Anbau von Zuckerrohr. Mit der Geschichte der Wirtschaft beginnt auch das Kapitel der Sklaverei in Brasilien. Wurden zunächst noch Eingeborene für das Schlagen und den Transport von Brasilholz eingesetzt, waren diese für die Arbeit auf den Zuckerrohrplantagen ungeeignet. Um den Arbeitskräftemangel zu begegnen, begann eine massive Einfuhr von afrikanischen Sklaven. Sklaven wurden zum Grundpfeiler der brasilianischen Wirtschaft und blieben diese über nahezu vier Jahrhunderte hinweg. Die Einfuhr und Ausbeutung von Sklaven hinterließ so jahrhundertelang nicht nur tiefe Spuren in der brasilianischen Wirtschaft, sondern auch in der Gesellschaft und Politik. Sklaverei war ein fester Bestandteil des brasilianischen Lebens und im Alltag tief verwurzelt. Die Abolitionsbewegung und die Abschaffung der Sklaverei lassen daher eine scharfe Zäsur in der brasilianischen Geschichte vermuten. Doch was waren die unmittelbaren Auswirkungen der Befreiung aller Sklaven? Um eine umfassende Beantwortung zu ermöglichen soll diese Frage in drei Teilaspekte untergliedert werden – einer politischen, einer gesellschaftlichen und einer wirtschaftlichen Dimension der Folgen.

The modern world is characterised by pervasive economic inequalities. Strong economic growth in some developing countries has contributed to a degree to a reduction in the levels of inequality between nations, yet inequality within nations remains high and in some cases, continues to increase. Ethnic Stratification and Economic Inequality around the World investigates the reasons for these striking differences, exploring the coincidence and interaction between economic stratification and ethnic differentiation. Drawing on extensive international survey and statistical data, the author develops a new theory and concrete hypotheses concerning the conditions which lead toward extreme inequality and those which tend toward greater equality. A systematic examination of the interaction between class structures, social stratification and ethnic differentiation, this book sheds light on the manner in which the resulting social structures produce different levels of economic inequality, offering a fivefold typology of patterns of ethnic stratification, which can be applied to present-day world regions. Drawing on the work of Max Weber to provide a rigorous investigation of inequality around the world, it demonstrates what 'sociology as a science of social reality' can significantly contribute to our understanding of global economic stratification.
