Europa ist mit rund 250 Mio. Sprechern slawischer Sprachen zu über einem Drittel "slawisch". Was bedeutet das für das Verständnis europäischer Kultur und Geschichte? Verfügt der slawischsprachige Bevölkerungsteil Europas über ein besonderes "slawisches" Bewusstsein, eine spezifische "slawische" Kultur und Geschichte. Ausgehend von dieser Frage erzählt Eduard Mühle die Geschichte der "Slawen" im Mittelalter völlig neu. Auf der Grundlage eingehender Quellenstudien entwirft er eine doppelte Perspektive. Zum einen beschreibt er die realen historischen Strukturen – von den "frühslawischen" Bevölkerungsgruppen und ihren ersten Herrschaftsbildungen im 7. bis 9. Jahrhundert, über die slawischsprachigen Reiche und nationes des 10. bis 12. bis zu den spätmittelalterlichen Gesellschaften des 13. bis frühen 15. Jahrhunderts . Zum anderen untersucht er die Fremd- und Selbstbilder, mit deren Hilfe die "Slawen" seit dem 6. Jahrhundert immer wieder als ein kulturelles Konstrukt entworfen bzw. "erfunden" worden sind und zeigt, wie diese Bilder schon im Mittelalter in verschiedenen Kontexten und zu unterschiedlichen Zwecken geschichtspolitisch instrumentalisiert wurden.

Although the distant origins of medieval Central Europe have enjoyed constant interest among historians, only marginal attention has been paid to the power and political prerequisites for the first Westernization, i.e. the gradual adoption of the values, norms and patterns of behavior of the Latin West by the communities (gentes) around the eastern edge of the Carolingian and subsequently Holy Roman Empires. Such a gap in knowledge, long overlooked, is now being filled by The Making of Medieval Central Europe: Power and Political Prerequisites for the First Westernization, 791-1122. While respecting the state of research and based on an original analysis of the sources, this book offers an informed reflection of a complex dialogue that was initiated after the collapse of the Avar Khaganate at the end of the 8th century and that, by the beginning of the 12th century, gave rise to a Central Europe that was Westernized (i.e. turned toward the West) yet in many ways distinctive. Another and no less important added value of this book is the author's conscious effort to overcome the narrow interpretive matrices defined by the national interests of the time.

Der globalhistorische Blick zeigt: Kulturkontakt war im Frühmittelalter zwar nicht allgegenwärtig, doch berührten die knapp einhundert nachweisbaren Beispiele kultureller Begegnung in der Zeit Ottos I. (936-973) die ganze Komplexität sozialer Lebenswirklichkeit im Frühmittelalter. Erstmals werden in diesem Buch sämtliche Kontakte des ottonischen Ostfrankens mit Vertretern aus dem nichtchristlichen Norden, Osten und Süden Europas systematisch erfasst und globalhistorisch ausgewertet. Sie hinterließen dabei eine Resonanz, die nachhaltig Wirkung entfaltete – sei es im konkreten Erleben als Grundkonstante für die Welt der Händler, in der anhaltenden Erinnerung eines kollektiven Gedächtnisses in der Welt der Mönche oder als Inszenierung imperialer Herrschaft in der Welt des Königs.
