Und obwohl sie durch ihre Berufe ewig getrennt waren, hingen sie doch immer noch sehr aneinander. Sie telefonierten viel miteinander, und wann immer Siegesmund, der vielbeschäftigte Reporter, in der Nähe war, kam er auch nach Falkengrund. Unter den Kollegen hielt man ihn für Reginas Freund. Auch die Jugendlichen glaubten es. Nur eine wußte, wer der Mann wirklich war. Nelly von Eidershof war eine unter den fünfzehn Schützlingen, die Regina unterrichtete. Mit ihr, der zehnjährigen Fürstentochter, hatte die junge Erzieherin ein ganz besonderes Verhältnis aufgebaut. Die immer sehr traurige und verschlossene Nelly hatte sich ihr eines Tages anvertraut. Weinend hatte sie ihr gestanden: »Mein Papa liebt mich nicht mehr!« Da Regina von der Internatsleiterin wußte, daß Nellys Mutter nicht mehr lebte, war sie durch das Geständnis der Kleinen besonders betroffen gewesen. »Wie kommst du darauf?« hatte sie die Kleine gefragt. Da hatte ihr Nelly ein weiteres Geständnis gemacht. »Sonst hat er mir immer geschrieben, aber nachdem ich ihm zu seinem Geburtstag das Bild von mir geschenkt habe – du weißt, welches – hat er nicht mehr geantwortet.« Ja, Regina wußte, welches Bild Nelly meinte.
