Die Geschichte des Deutschschweizer Hörspiels wurde bisher noch kaum erforscht. Die vorliegende Untersuchung spannt einen weiten Bogen von den Live-Sendungen der Pionierzeit in den zwanziger Jahren über die unterhaltenden Serien und literarischen Worthörspiele der Nachkriegszeit bis zur Produktion der Abteilung «Dramatik» von Radio DRS, die seit 1965 eine erstaunliche Fülle von Radiokunstwerken hervorgebracht hat. Das Hörspiel wird nicht nur als literarische Gattung, sondern vor allem auch als Produkt des Mediums Radio beschrieben, dessen Institutionsgeschichte den Rahmen der Darstellung bildet. In monographischen Einschüben und im Entwurf einer typologischen Gliederung werden dreissig Hörspiele von bedeutenden Schweizer Autorinnen und Autoren interpretiert, u.a. von Max Frisch, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Walter Oberer, Rudolf Jakob Humm, Walter Matthias Diggelmann, Adolf Muschg, Erica Pedretti, Peter Bichsel, Silja Walter, Gerold Späth, Herbert Meier und Jürg Amann.
