Die Stadt Chelmno/Culm dient Ulrich Müller in seiner Dissertation zum Anlass, eines der bedeutendsten Ereignisse der polnisch-deutschen Beziehungen zu beleuchten: die Teilungen Polens im 18. Jahrhundert. Wie vollzog sich der Übergang unter die preußische Herrschaft? Wie gestaltete sich die russische Besetzung von Stadt und Umland während des Siebenjährigen Krieges? Wie stellten sich die sprachlichen Verhältnisse in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts dar? In der interdisziplinär angelegten Arbeit werden der Zusammenhang von politischer Entwicklung und Sprach- und Kulturkontakt aufgespürt und nationale Zuschreibungen hinterfragt. Die sprachlichen Phänomene haben sozial- und politikgeschichtliche Bedeutung und liefern einen substantiellen Beitrag zur Bewertung der Teilungen Polens. Drei Prämissen werden dabei berücksichtigt: 1. Mehrsprachigkeit ist keine exotische Erscheinung sondern ein grundsätzliches Alltagsphänomen. 2. Diversität ist kein Charakteristikum einzelner Regionen sondern eine grundsätzliche soziale Qualität. 3. Sprache ist die konkrete sprachliche Kommunikation, einzelne Sprachen dagegen Abstraktionen aus dieser. Der Herrschaftswechsel ist sowohl durch Veränderungen als auch durch Kontinuitäten gekennzeichnet. Außerdem sind die Sprachen und Kulturen nicht klar voneinander abgegrenzt. Insgesamt ist die Arbeit ein Plädoyer dafür, segregierende Vorstellungen wie „Nation“ oder „Einzelsprache“ durch integrierende Ansätze zu ersetzen.

Not a one-sided study of victimization, this book treats the contributions of both the Polish state and the German minority to the conflict that culminated in their mutual destruction.
