Dresden: eine Stadt mit tausend Gesichtern. Dresden ist durch die Zeit des Barocks zu einer Stadt als Gesamtkunstwerk geworden. Inspiriert durch seine Reisen durch Europa, ließ August der Starke (1694-1733) die damalige Residenzstadt umbauen. Er und sein Sohn Friedrich August II. gelten als Stadtgestalter und haben Dresden in ihrer augustinischen Periode den Ruf als Kunststadt verschafft. Neben dem Barock prägte auch die Zeit der Renaissance, in der das Schloss und die benachbarten Neorenaissancebauten (Semperoper) entstanden sind, das Stadtbild von Dresden. Auch die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts einsetzende gründerzeitliche Stadterweiterung beeinflusste das heute bestehende Bild von Dresden, das nicht nur Hauptstadt des Bundeslandes Sachsen, sondern auch Verwaltungs-, Kunst- und Musikstadt ist. Zudem hat sich die Stadt im Laufe ihrer 800-jährigen Geschichte zu einem Zentrum der Wissenschaft entwickelt. Diese Entwicklung Dresdens von einem slawischen Fischerdorf zur weltbekannten Großstadt vollzog sich allerdings nicht immer unproblematisch. Man kann sogar sagen, dass die Stadt Dresden zweimal gegründet wurde. Die Zerstörung der Stadt durch Bombenangriffe im Zweiten Weltkrieg in der Nacht vom 13. auf den 14. Februar 1945 gilt für die sächsische Landeshauptstadt wohl als schwärzester Tag in ihrer Geschichte. Gleichzeitig kann man dieses Ereignis aber auch als Geburtsstunde eines „neuen“ Dresdens mit einer international anerkannten Zukunft sehen. Der Wiederaufbau der Stadt, begleitet von einem gleichzeitigen Wandel, und die Wiedervereinigung des geteilten Deutschlands bilden Meilensteine in der Entwicklung Dresdens zu einer internationalen Stadt. Dieses Buch soll den enormen Strukturwandel Dresdens vor und nach der Wende aufarbeiten und erklären. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt hierbei auf der Veränderung des Stadtbildes und der durchgeführten Stadtplanung.

Spatial econometrics deals with spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity, critical aspects of the data used by regional scientists. These characteristics may cause standard econometric techniques to become inappropriate. In this book, I combine several recent research results to construct a comprehensive approach to the incorporation of spatial effects in econometrics. My primary focus is to demonstrate how these spatial effects can be considered as special cases of general frameworks in standard econometrics, and to outline how they necessitate a separate set of methods and techniques, encompassed within the field of spatial econometrics. My viewpoint differs from that taken in the discussion of spatial autocorrelation in spatial statistics - e.g., most recently by Cliff and Ord (1981) and Upton and Fingleton (1985) - in that I am mostly concerned with the relevance of spatial effects on model specification, estimation and other inference, in what I caIl a model-driven approach, as opposed to a data-driven approach in spatial statistics. I attempt to combine a rigorous econometric perspective with a comprehensive treatment of methodological issues in spatial analysis.
