Jahrhundert v. Chr. einen Wandel und hatte nach Peter Scholz eine uberragende Bedeutung in der hellenistischen Stadt." Es hatte vielfaltige und umfangreiche Funktionen, die das Leben in der Polis mitpragten. Insofern muss sich auch die Frage nach dem Leiter des Gymnasions stellen. Der hellenistische Gymnasiarch muss an der Spitze dieser Institution eine wichtige Rolle einnehmen. Diese Arbeit soll sich daher mit der Frage beschaftigen, welche Stellung der Gymnasiarch als Vorsteher der elementaren Institution Gymnasion einnahm. Dazu soll zuerst auf das Gymnasion in hellenistischer Zeit eingegangen werden um eine Basis fur die Untersuchung der Rolle ihres Leiters zu schaffen. Hier sollen kompakt vor allem die Entwicklung und die Funktionen der Institution dargelegt werden. Im dritten Kapitel soll als zunachst auf das Aufgabenfeld der Gymnasiarchen eingegangen werden, um ihre Stellung greifbar zu machen. Anschliessend soll dann die Finanzierung der Gymnasien im Zentrum stehen, auch hier liegt der Fokus auf der Rolle des Gymnasiarchen. Um die Ergebnisse anhand eines konkreten Beispiels exemplarisch darzustellen, soll danach auf der Ehrenbeschluss fur den Gymnasiarchen Lysons in Xanthos untersucht und die Arbeit schlussendlich in einem abschliessenden Fazit zusammengefasst werden."

The Luwians inhabited Anatolia and Syria in late second through early first millennium BC. They are mainly known through their Indo-European language, preserved on cuneiform tablets and hieroglyphic stelae. However, where the Luwians lived or came from, how they coexisted with their Hittite and Greek neighbors, and the peculiarities of their religion and material culture, are all debatable matters. A conference convened in Reading in June 2011 in order to discuss the current state of the debate, summarize points of disagreement, and outline ways of addressing them in future research. Worshiped throughout the ancient Mediterranean world, the "Mother of the Gods" was known by a variety of names. Among peoples of Asia Minor, where her cult first began, she often shared the names of local mountains. The Greeks commonly called her Cybele, the name given to her by the Phrygians of Asia Minor, and identified her with their own mother goddesses Rhea, Gaia, and Demeter. The Romans adopted her worship at the end of the Second Punic War and called her Mater Magna, Great Mother. Her cult became one of the three most important mystery cults in the Roman Empire, along with those of Mithras and Isis. And as Christianity took hold in the Roman world, ritual elements of her cult were incorporated into the burgeoning cult of the Virgin Mary. In this study, Ramsay MacMullen steps aside from the well-worn path that previous scholars have trod to explore exactly how early Christian doctrines became official. Drawing on extensive verbatim stenographic records, he analyzes the ecumenical councils from A.D. 325 to 553, in which participants gave authority to doctrinal choices by majority vote. The author investigates the sometimes astonishing bloodshed and violence that marked the background to church council proceedings, and from there goes on to describe the planning and staging of councils, the emperors' role, the routines of debate, the participants' understanding of the issues, and their views on God's intervention in their activities. He concludes with a look at the significance of the councils and their doctrinal decisions within the history of Christendom.

This book examines foundation myths told about the Ionian cities during the archaic and classical periods. It uses these myths to explore the complex and changing ways in which civic identity was constructed in Ionia, relating this to the wider discourses about ethnicity and cultural difference that were current in the Greek world at this time. The Ionian cities seem to have rejected oppositional models of cultural difference which set in contrast East and West, Europe and Asia, Greek and Barbarian, opting instead for a more fluid and nuanced perspective on ethnic and cultural distinctions. The conclusions of this book have far-reaching implications for our understanding of Ionia, but also challenge current models of Greek ethnicity and identity, suggesting that there was a more diverse conception of Greekness in antiquity than has often been assumed.
