Ist ein nach der Stoa unnatürliches Leben gleichzeitig auch ein sinnloses Leben? Und wenn absehbar ist, dass das restliche Leben in solch einem unnatürlichen Zustand gelebt werden muss, gebietet es die Lehre der Stoa, aus einem solchen Leben vorzeitig und eigenhändig auszuscheiden? Diesen Fragen soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit nachgegangen werden. In einem ersten Abschnitt soll die Ethik der Stoa in ihren Grundzügen dargestellt werden, um eine Grundlage für das im zweiten Teil behandelte Thema des Suizids zu legen. Hierbei wird neben anderen Philosophen vor allem Seneca‘s Position einen großen Platz einnehmen. Zuletzt soll die Relevanz der stoischen Haltung zum Suizid in der gegenwärtigen Debatte rund um die Sterbehilfe geprüft werden, um danach mit einem Fazit die Arbeit abzuschließen. Was macht ein Leben zu einem guten Leben? Für die Stoa war die Antwort auf diese Frage ‚ein Leben gemäß der Natur‘. Nun läuft eine solche Aussage bei Laien vermutlich eher zu der Vermutung, die Stoa empfehle ein Leben als Jäger und Sammler, fernab der Zivilisation und jeglichen industriellen Fortschritts. Betrachtet man jedoch die Lebensläufe sämtlicher Mitglieder der Stoa wird recht schnell klar, dass dem nicht so ist. Ein Leben gemäß der Natur bedeutet für die Stoiker ein Leben im Einklang mit der Vernunft. Mit dieser wurden die Menschen, ebenso wie die Tiere mit Trieben, von der Natur ausgestattet. Der Mensch ist zwar ebenfalls mit Trieben ausgestattet, kann diese jedoch dank der Vernunft prüfen und regulieren und muss sie nicht zwanghaft, wie es das Tier tut, verfolgen. Daher muss es für den Menschen ebenso naturgemäß sein, seiner Vernunft nach zu handeln, wie es für das Tier naturgemäß ist, seinen Trieben nach zu handeln. Selbsterklärend stellt sich hierbei die Frage, welche Handlungen der Vernunft widersprechen und welche Handlungen ihr entsprechen.

Building on the results of the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant finally published his system of moral philosophy in two volumes in 1797. By then, he had been planning to write a Metaphysics of Morals for three decades; but only the title remained unchanged while the basic principles of his theoretical and practical philosophy changed dramatically. Drawing on a wide range of sources from ancient census data and funerary commemorations to modern medical accounts, statistics and demographic models, the author explores the nature of premodern disease patterns, challenges existing assumptions about ancient age structure, and develops a new methodology for the assessment of Egyptian poplation size. Contextualising the study of Roman Egypt within the broader framework of premodern demography, ecology and medical history, this is the first attempt to interpret and explain demographic conditions in antiquity in terms of the underlying causes of disease and death.
