Die Literatur der Moderne um 1900 lässt sich in produktiver Weise herausfordern von einer Medienkonkurrenz, die sich als ikonische Wende im Verhältnis der Bilder zum kulturellen Leitmedium der Schrift beschreiben lässt. Gerade weil ein geschärftes Bewusstsein für die mediale Eigenlogik der Künste die Sphären des Sprachlichen und des Visuellen trennt, wird das Nachbarmedium des Bildes für die Literatur als das Andere ihrer selbst attraktiv. Am Beispiel Hugo von Hofmannsthals, Rainer Maria Rilkes und Robert Musils rekonstruiert die Studie die diskursiven und wissensgeschichtlichen Kontexte der literarischen Bildreflexionen. Sie reichen von der Kunstgeschichte über die Wahrnehmungsphysiologie und Psychopathologie bis zur Kulturanthropologie und Sprachphilosophie. Gerade die Schnittstellen zwischen anthropologischen und medialen Bildphänomenen werden auf ihre literarischen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten hin befragt. Darüber hinaus geht es der vorliegenden Studie aber vor allem um die Darstellung der poetologischen Konsequenzen, die sich aus der medialen Transgressionslust der Literatur ergeben. Sie stellt sich damit auch der grundsätzlichen Frage, was Bilder in der Literatur jenseits des Klischees der Anschaulichkeit gerade in der Moderne sein können. Im Spannungsfeld von Sprache und Bild lassen sich innovative literarische Strategien ausmachen. In der vermeintlichen Entäußerung an ein fremdes Medium konturiert die Literatur somit ihre genuinen Mittel, Bildobsession wird literarisch produktiv.

How did painters and their public speak about art in Rembrandt's age?
