Zwei Frauen nehmen die Kondolenzen entgegen: Fay, die junge Witwe, eine laute, egoistische Texanerin, die mit ihrer Sippschaft zu all der stillen Vornehmheit ringsum einen störenden, aber ungemein lebhaften Kontrast bildet. Und Laurel, die Tochter des Richters aus seiner ersten Ehe, die älter als ihre Stiefmutter ist und aus dem fernen, kalten Chicago herbeigereist ist. Laurel ist scheinbar ganz heimisch in dieser Welt, sie saugt sich noch einmal ganz voll mit Erinnerungen an ihre Kindheit und ihre Eltern. Und plötzlich wird ihr klar, daß sie unangenehme Vorfälle und schmerzliche Wahrheiten nicht mehr so einfach verdrängen kann.
