Geographische Transformationsforschung war bislang vor allem Strukturanalyse. An diesem Defizit setzt diese handlungstheoretisch ausgerichtete und empirisch fundierte sozialgeographische Untersuchung an: die Auswirkungen der Wiedervereinigung auf das individuelle Handeln und insbesondere auf die eigene Erwerbsbiographie werden aus Sicht der Menschen in den neuen Bundeslandern dargestellt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass sich Strukturen zwar andern konnen, die Handlungsroutinen sich aber in vielen Fallen als resistent erweisen. So entstand eine Vielzahl sehr unterschiedlicher Wiedervereinigungsbilanzen. Dieses Ergebnis ist auch fur die Politik von Bedeutung, denn es macht deutlich, dass fur das Erreichen der "inneren Einheit" noch Handlungsbedarf besteht.

English summary: The concept of the church underwent a transformation in the early Enlightenment when two horizons were broadened, one beyond the boundaries of theology and one within them. As a result, the dogmatic concept of church expanded and ecclesiology was addressed outside of dogmatic theology. German description: Die Transformation des Kirchenbegriffs in der Fruhaufklarung vollzog sich in Form einer doppelten Horizontuberschreitung zum einen uber die Grenzen der Theologie hinaus und zum anderen innerhalb dieser. Die Offnung der ekklesiologischen Debatte ausserhalb der Theologie fuhrte zur Ethisierung und Universalisierung des Kirchenbegriffs verbunden mit dem Aufkommen einer Kultur der religiosen Mundigkeit des Laien. Auf der Suche nach einem allgemeineren Begrundungszusammenhang ruckte der Kirchenbegriff in den Fokus von Naturrecht und Religionstheorie. Die Etablierung des Territorial- und Kollegialsystem brachte die vorlaufige Klarung und Regelung des Verhaltnisses von Kirche und Staat. In Reaktion auf die Transformation des Kirchenbegriffs ausserhalb der Theologie kam es erst relativ spat zur Transformation innerhalb dieser. Die Folge war eine Erweiterung des dogmatischen Kirchenbegriffs und die Thematisierung der Ekklesiologie ausserhalb der Dogmatik.

The book focusses on the origin and transformation of the priestly festival calendar. Since the epoch-making work of Julius Wellhausen at the end of the 19th century the differences between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars have often been explained in terms of a gradual evolution, which shows an increasing historicisation, denaturalisation and ritualisation. The festivals were in Wellhausen's view gradually detached from agricultural conditions and celebrated more and more at fixed points in the year. This study tries to show that the changes in the priestly festival calendar reflect a conscious effort to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the semi-annual layout of the Babylonian festival year. The ramifications of the change only come to the fore after a careful study of the agricultural conditions of ancient Israel - and Mesopotamia - makes clear that passover and the festival of unleavened bread were originally celebrated in the second month of the year. The first month of the year envisaged by the priestly festival calendar for the celebration of passover and the festival of unleavened bread in turn mirrors the date of one of the two semi-annual Babylonian New Year festivals. The two Babylonian New Year festivals were celebrated exactly six months apart at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. In order to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the Babylonian scheme with two New Year festivals a year, the date of passover and the festival of unleavened bread had to be moved up by one month. The consequences for the origin of passover, the festival of unleavened bread, the festival of weeks and the festival of huts are charted and the relations between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars are determined anew.

The Anglican Bishop George Bell (of Chichester) and the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Willem A. Visser’t Hooft (of Geneva) exchanged hundreds of letters between 1938 and 1958. The correspondence, reproduced and commented upon here, mirrors the efforts made across the ecumenical movement to unite the Christian churches and also to come to terms with an age of international crisis and conflict. In these first decades of the World Council, it was widely felt that the Church could make a noteworthy contribution to the mitigation of political tensions all over the world. That’s why Bell and Visser’t Hooft talked not only to bishops and the clergy, but also to the prime ministers and presidents of many countries. They raised their voices in memoranda and published their public letters in important newspapers. This was the World Council’s most successful period.

This book contributes to the growing scientific literature on ‘intangible cultural heritage’ – determined by UNESCO to be particularly worthy of safeguarding and transmission – by advancing a theoretical-analytical framework for the (in)tangible cultural heritage of dance. By exploring the potential of the ‘intangible materiality’ of dance practice the book argues that implementing the concept of a ‘performative dance-archive’ creates a new analytic field: research in praxis. The concept of the ‘performative dance-archive’ draws out the potential for safeguarding and transmission of dance heritage, but also the challenges of the opposition between living heritage and the codifying of cultural inventories. This book uses the formal and contextual transformation of Argentine tango and German modern dance to discuss this ambiguity of intangible heritage and how the “performative dance-archive” creates a cognitive, empractical approach to determine, archive, and distribute dance knowledge. This is a timely methodological intervention in the context of the increasing importance of the intangible cultural heritage. It enables us to re-revise the concept of (im)materiality and the specific knowledges within cultural practice as a necessary fundamental category for research-processes and societal growth.
