Im Rahmen seiner Tätigkeit als Arzt für die weiblichen Angehörigen des Hofs klärt Yao den Mord an einer kaiserlichen Nebenfrau auf.In der zweiten Erzählung zieht Yao mit seiner Verlobten in die Provinz und muss dort den Mord an einem daoistischen Priester, der nicht den üblichen Vorstellungen entspricht, aufklären.Die dritte Geschichte beschreibt den Fall der Ermordung eines Kalligraphen und Malers, der bei einer Wanderung etwas sah, was er besser nicht gesehen hätte. Und so erzählen alle Geschichten etwas über die Kultur und Lebensweise im alten China.
