This book is about the psycho-political visions and programmes in early-twentieth century Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Amidst the political and social unrest that followed the First World War, psychiatrists attempted to use their clinical insights to understand, diagnose, and treat society at large. The book uses a variety of published and unpublished sources to retrace major debates, protagonists, and networks involved in the redrawing of the boundaries of psychiatry’s sphere of authority. The book is based on three interconnected case studies: the overt pathologisation of the 1918/19 revolution led by right-wing German psychiatrists; the project of medical expansionism under the label of ‘applied psychiatry’ in inter-war Vienna; and the attempt to unite and implement different approaches to psychiatric prophylaxis in the movement for mental hygiene. By exploring these histories, the book also sheds light on the emergence of ideas that still shape the field to the present day and shows the close connection between utopian promises and the worst abuses of psychiatry.

This book draws on the example of the major cities of Leipzig and Dresden to illustrate continuity and change in public health in the German Democratic Republic. Based on archival work, it will demonstrate how members of the medical profession successfully manipulated their pre-1945 past in order to continue practising, leading to persistence in the social conception of medicine and disease after Communism took hold. This was particularly evident in attitudes towards and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and the pathology of deviant behaviour among young people.

Psychiatric Contours investigates new histories of psychiatry, derangement, and agitated subjectivities in colonial and decolonizing Africa. The volume lets the multivalent term madness broaden perception, well beyond the psychiatric. Many chapters detect the mad or the psychiatric in unhinged persons, frantic collectives, and distressing situations. Others investigate individuals suffering from miscategorization. A key Foucauldian word, vivacity, illuminates how madness aligns with pathology, creativity, turbulence, and psychopolitics. The archives, patient-authored or not, speak to furies and fantasies inside asylums, colonial institutions, decolonizing missions, and slave ships. Der Fall »Contergan« gilt als größter Arzneimittel-Skandal der deutschen Geschichte. Das 1957 eingeführte Schlaf- und Beruhigungsmittel avancierte bis zum Frühjahr 1960 zu einem der meistkonsumierten Arzneimittel in der Bundesrepublik. Der wirtschaftliche Erfolg war wesentlich bedingt durch eine aggressive Vermarktungsstrategie, die das Mittel als »gefahrlos« und »völlig ungiftig« bewarb. Der in Contergan enthaltene Arzneistoff Thalidomid konnte bei Erwachsenen aber schwerwiegende Nervenschäden auslösen und führte bei Einnahme in den ersten Schwangerschaftswochen zu schwersten Wachstumsschädigungen beim Embryo. In der Bundesrepublik kamen zwischen 4.000 und 5.000 betroffene Kinder zur Welt. Als die fruchtschädigende Wirkung Ende November 1961 publik wurde, sah sich der Hersteller Grünenthal gezwungen, das Mittel vom Markt nehmen. Der Fall weitete sich zu einem erschütternden Skandal aus, der auch staatliche Instanzen mit einbezog. Eine zentrale Rolle spielte dabei das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen. Da die Aufsicht über das Gesundheitswesen in den 1960er Jahren hauptsächlich den Bundesländern oblag und der Hersteller in Stolberg bei Aachen saß, fiel das Präparat in die Zuständigkeit der nordrhein-westfälischen Landesbehörden. Zum anderen lag die strafrechtliche Verfolgung des Falles im Amtsbereich der nordrhein-westfälischen Justiz. Vor diesem Hintergrund beleuchtet die Arbeit die Rolle der staatlichen Arzneimittelaufsicht bis zur Marktrücknahme Contergans, die gesundheits- und sozialpolitischen Reaktionen des Landes und die strafrechtliche Aufklärung des Falles Contergan, die zu dem bis dahin umfangreichsten Strafrechtsverfahren der neueren deutschen Geschichte führte.
