This attention to Artemisia, after many years of scholarly neglect, is partially due to interest in the dramatic details of her early life, including the widely publicized rape trial of her painting tutor, Agostino Tassi, and her admission to Florence’s esteemed Accademia del Disegno. While the artist’s early paintings have been extensively discussed, her later work has been largely dismissed. This beautifully illustrated and elegantly written book provides a revolutionary look at Artemisia’s later career, refuting longstanding assumptions about the artist. The fact that she was semi-illiterate has erroneously led scholars to assume a lack of literary and cultural education on her part. Unter großem Bemühen und durch ihr ausgezeichnetes Talent gelang es Artemisia 1616 als erste Frau in die Florentiner "Accademia delle arti del disegno" aufgenommen zu werden. Als Tochter des in Rom lebenden Malers Orazio Gentileschi, der ihr Talent erkannte, wurde sie bereits früh in der Malerei unterrichtet. So gab Orazio seine Tochter zum Erlernen der perspektivischen Darstellung auch die Obhut seines Malerkollegen Agostino Tassi. Dadurch wurde Artemisia Opfer einer Vergewaltigung durch ihren Lehrer, gegen welchen sie gerichtlich vorging. Heute werden viele ihrer Gemälde als Racheakt an eben diesem Täter interpretiert. Dies ist jedoch eine kritisch zu betrachtende Sichtweise, da zu jener Zeit Kunstwerke zumeist Auftragsarbeiten waren und die Malerei nicht wie heute zum Ausdruck innerer Gefühle genutzt wurde. Unterstützt wird diese sich hartnäckig haltende Annahme jedoch dadurch, dass viele der ihr zugeschriebenen Kunstwerke Heroinnen im Sieg über Männer darstellen, so beispielsweise in den Werken "Judith tötet Holofernes" oder "Jael und Sisera". So wird häufig angenommen, dass Holofernes und Sisera in ihren Darstellungen ihren Vergewaltiger symbolisieren und die Gewalttat einen Racheakt an eben diesem.
