Mit dem Zitat des französischen Jesuiten Paul Henry sei zusammenfassend zu Beginn dieser Arbeit das vorhergeschickt, was die nachfolgenden Seiten erst aufzuzeigen versuchen werden: Augustins Rezeption des neuplatonischen Denkens. Entsprechend philosophische Denkmuster verteilen sich über das ganze Denken und Werk des großen Bischofs und Kirchenvaters. Daher sei der Umfang dieser Arbeit exemplarisch beschränkt auf das neunte Buch der Confessiones, näherhin: auf die Vision von Ostia. Die Hausarbeit folgt in ihrem Aufbau einem inhaltlichen Dreischritt. Sie referiert zu Beginn den einschlägigen Passus der "Bekenntnisse", ehe im Anschluss der relevante Gedankengang Plotins ausgeführt wird. Abschließend gilt es, die neuplatonischen Einflüsse zu sezieren und eventuelle Nuancen, die Augustin einpflegt, vorzustellen. Es soll gezeigt werden, ob es gelingt, die Kategorien von Neuplatonismus und Christentum miteinander vereinbar wirken zu lassen. Wenn Augustin auch stark mit Plotins Gedanken sympathisiert, so lässt er jedoch nicht zu, die wesentliche Distanz abzubauen. Und doch sagt er an anderer Stelle, weshalb es gerade die Platoniker sind, mit denen er sich auseinandersetzt: Sie seien diejenigen, "die den wahren Gott als den Urheber der Dinge, als die Lichtquelle der Wahrheit und als den Spender der Glückseligkeit bezeichnet haben, sondern auch andere Philosophen haben zurücktreten vor diesen großen Männern, den Erkennern des großen Gottes, (...)". Die gefundenen Antworten konnten das Phänomen jedoch nie völlig fassen, so dass die Beschäftigung mit dem Thema "Zeit" sich durch die Geschichte von Philosophie und Theologie zieht. Am gegenwärtigsten erscheint das Zeitphänomen wohl in der in der Uhr-Zeit, der kalendarischen Zeit, die durch Heideggers Frage, ob denn der Mensch in dieser Form (der Uhrzeit) über das Sein der Zeit verfügt, oder ob er sich darin selbst meint, oder ob "es am Ende die Zeit selbst [ist], die sich in uns die Uhr anschafft" direkt in die Mitte der philosophisch-theologischen Thematik führt. Unter spezifisch theologischem Blickwinkel stellen sich weitere Fragen. Das Verhältnis zwischen Gott, dem traditionell Ewigkeit zugeschrieben wird, und der als zeitlich erlebten Welt wurde Anlass intensiven theologischen und philosophischen Nachdenkens. Kennzeichnend für diese Bemühungen sind die Verbindung von Offenbarungsgut und philosophischer Reflexion. Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist die Zeittheorie des Kirchenvaters Aurelius Augustinus, wie er sie in Buch XI seiner Confessiones dargelegt hat. Sie wird als Teil der Confessiones eingeordnet und ihre Strukturen herausgearbeitet. Auch der Motivation Augustins, die Endlichkeitsproblematik anzugehen (besonders die Todeserfahrung aus Confessiones IV,9), wird Gewicht für die Interpretation zugemessen. Maßgeblich erscheint darüber hinaus das Anliegen, Confessiones XI in den breiten Strom der philosophischen und theologischen Gedankenwelt des Augustinus und der antiken Philosophie und ihrer Zielsetzungen überhaupt einzureihen. This volume brings together key findings of the long-term research project ‘Religious Individualisation in Historical Perspective’ (Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt University). Combining a wide range of disciplinary approaches, methods and theories, the volume assembles over 50 contributions that explore and compare processes of religious individualisation in different religious environments and historical periods, in particular in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe from antiquity to the recent past. Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios. The so-called "Theology of Aristotle" is a translation of the Enneads of Plotinus, the most important representative of late ancient Platonism. It was produced in the 9th century CE within the circle of al-Kindī, one of the most important groups for the early reception of Greek thought in Arabic. In part because the "Theology" was erroneously transmitted under Aristotle's authorship, it became the single most important conduit by which Neoplatonism reached the Islamic world. It is referred to by such thinkers as al-Fārābī, in an attempt to demonstrate the agreement between Platonism and Aristotelianism, Avicenna, who wrote a set of comments on the text, and later on thinkers of Safavid Persia including Mullā Ṣadrā. Yet the "Theology" is not just a translation. It may in fact more accurately be described as a creative paraphrase, which takes frequent liberties with the source text and even includes whole paragraphs' worth of new material. Adamson's book offers a philosophical interpretation of the changes introduced in the Arabic version. It is argued that these changes were in part intended to show the relevance of Plotinus' thought for contemporary Islamic culture, for instance by connecting the Neoplatonist theory of the First Principle to theological disputes within Islam over the status of God's attributes. At the same time the paraphrase reflects a tendency to harmonize the various strands of Greek thought, so that a critique by Plotinus of Aristotle's theory of the soul is subtly changed into a defense of Aristotle's theory against a possible misinterpretation. The upshot, or so Adamson argues, is that the "Theology" needs to be read as an original philosophical work in its own right, and understood within the context of the ʿAbbāsid era.
