Jahrhundert Weitgehend auf Tatsachen beruhende Aus- und Rückwanderungsschicksale auf verschiedenen Zeitebenen Stimmungsvolle exemplarische Darstellung einer Walser Wanderung Im Jahr 1300 verlässt die junge Walserin Barbara mit ihrem Mann und Mitwanderern das von Armut und Naturkatastrophen geprägte Lötschental und lässt sich im hinteren Lauterbrunnental nieder, wo die Siedler Mürren, Gimmelwald und den Weiler Ammerten begründen. Im 18. Jahrhundert stirbt Ammerten aus, nicht aber die Familien, die diesen Namen tragen. Sie lassen sich im vorderen Lauterbrunnental nieder. Doch auch dort wird es Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wirtschaftlich eng. 1879 wandert Elisabeth Ammeter mit Mann und Kindern in den Kaukasus aus. Um die Jahrhundertwende reist Anna Stücker aus Thun nach Georgien und heiratet dort Elisabeths Sohn Fritz. Bei der Russischen Revolution wird die Familie enteignet und ist zunehmender Verfolgung ausgesetzt. Deshalb müssen 1929 die Ammeters Georgien verlassen. Anna unternimmt einen Abstecher nach Thun und folgt dann der restlichen Familie nach Kanada. Lediglich Elisabeths jüngste Tochter Martha Siegenthaler-Ammeter kehrt dauerhaft in die Schweiz zurück und erlebt einen schwierigen Neubeginn im Emmental der 1930er und 1940er Jahre. Die Autorin verwebt verschiedene Zeitebenen zu einer eindrücklichen Familiensaga über mehrere Jahrhunderte, die exemplarisch für viele Auswandererschicksale in der Schweiz steht. The study of ethnology or ’Volkskunde’ in Austria has had a troubled past. Through most of the 20th century it was under the influence of the so-called Viennese ’Mythological School’ and the controversy between the two opposing branches, the ’Ritualist’ and the ’Mythologists', set much of the agenda from the 1920s until long after the World War ended in 1945. The volume examines two Austrian characters, Richard Wolfram and Karl Haiding, and the impact of their research and sets them in the context of Austrian ethnology before, during and after the war years. The book concludes by examining the present day ethnological outlook in the country.

For many generations, Guy Fawkes and his gunpowder plot, the 'Man in the Iron Mask' and the 'Devils of Loudun' have offered some of the most compelling images of the early modern period. Conspiracies, real or imagined, were an essential feature of early modern life, offering a seemingly rational and convincing explanation for patterns of political and social behaviour. This volume examines conspiracies and conspiracy theory from a broad historical and interdisciplinary perspective, by combining the theoretical approach of the history of ideas with specific examples from the period. Each contribution addresses a number of common themes, such as the popularity of conspiracy theory as a mode of explanation through a series of original case studies. Individual chapters examine, for example, why witches, religious minorities and other groups were perceived in conspiratorial terms, and how far, if at all, these attitudes were challenged or redefined by the Enlightenment. Cultural influences on conspiracy theory are also discussed, particularly in those chapters dealing with the relationship between literature and politics. As prevailing notions of royal sovereignty equated open opposition with treason, almost any political activity had to be clandestine in nature, and conspiracy theory was central to interpretations of early modern politics. Factions and cabals abounded in European courts as a result, and their actions were frequently interpreted in conspiratorial terms. By the late eighteenth century it seemed as if this had begun to change, and in Britain in particular the notion of a 'loyal opposition' had begun to take shape. Yet the outbreak of the French Revolution was frequently explained in conspiratorial terms, and subsequently European rulers and their subjects remained obsessed with conspiracies both real and imagined. This volume helps us to understand why.

David Rösti was born ca. 1555-1560 at Adelrain near Frutigen, Switzerland. He married Barbli Scharen in 1579. They had ten children, 1581-1605, born at Frutigen. He died after 1605 at Frutigen. Descendants listed lived in the Switzerland, the United States, and Canada. Descendants in America live in Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, Kansas, Alberta, Ontario, Idaho, Oregon and elsewhere. Descendants spell their surname Rosti and Roesti.

Hans Peter – oder ‹Mani› – Matter (1936–1972) hat als Liedermacher und Sprachkünstler Generationen begeistert. Nirgends wird dies so deutlich wie in seiner Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Staat. ‹Die pluralistische Staatstheorie› entstand während eines Forschungsaufenthalts in Cambridge in den Jahren 1967 und 1968. Die als juristische Habilitationsschrift konzipierte Arbeit rückt fünf Autoren aus unterschiedlichen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen ins Zentrum (Otto von Gierke, Emile Durkheim, William James, Léon Duguit, Hugo Krabbe und Harold Laski). Die staatstheoretische Darstellung kreist dabei um die grundlegenden Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von Staat und Recht, nach der staatlichen Souveränität und nach der Stellung von Individuum und Verbänden im und zum Staat.
