As far as we know, there is no other planet like Earth in the universe. At closer inspection our home planet reveals itself as a unique system of relationships and interactions of the major subsystems, the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere. Their surprisingly fine-tuned interactions were capable to bring forth life, including the evolution of humans, and life in turn modifies the subsystems yet again. In researching this highly complex system, the Earth sciences have changed significantly in recent decades. Today, its various disciplines are considered to be components of a systemic approach. At the same time topics such as climate change and shortage of resources indicate that modern geological research is not only fascinating but also indispensible for us humans, who use Earth as habitat and creative space. There is much to discover still. In the ongoing exploration of Earth – be it at its easily accessible surface or deep below, be it in the lab or from space – new, astonishing findings are constantly being uncovered. But geoscientific research does not simply focus on exciting science. It is a truly global undertaking, without which answers to the many challenges of a continuously growing world population and an increasing pressure on the natural life systems cannot be found. Large research institutions such as the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam make important contributions to this progress. New Directions in Biblical Theology contains the papers of an international conference on Biblical Theology which was organized by the Faculty of Theology of Aarhus University on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. This volume of collected essays on Ephesians is divided into three sections. The first part deals thoroughly with introductory questions such as composition and style, the relationship to other Early Christian literature and Qumran, authorship (with a new suggestion), addressees and social setting. In the second part the extensive history of Early Christian texts and editions (in the Muratorian canon, the Marcionite prologues and the Euthalian apparatus) with special regard to Ephesians is investigated. The third part is dedicated to the interpretation of texts and themes of special importance for the understanding of this pseudo-pauline letter by one of Paul's younger disciples and co-workers. Here the theological and liturgical setting is reflected upon. Through all the detailed scrutiny of the history and the semantics of the epistle to the Ephesians, the question of its illocutionary function remains in focus. Not only what the auctor of Ephesians says in his letter but what he does by saying it is the central issue in Nils Alstrup Dahl's life-long interest in this intriguing letter.More than half of these essays have never been published before, and one essay is translated from Norwegian into English for the first time.

He argues against the thesis that the so-called "apodicitic" laws in the Old Testament were distinctively Israelite, a single form, or originating in the liturgy and covenant-making. Using the story of Jonadab and the Rechabites in Jeremiah 35 and the incest prohibitions in Leviticus 18, the author argues that the setting in life of prohibitions was the ethos of the tribe.
