In the field of machine tools the considerable progress which has taken place in the last two decades, has been due to a large extent to the co-opera tion between teaching, research and industry. The paper describes how this co-operation, extending far beyond national boundaries, has influenced design fundamentals as well as design practice for metal cutting machine tools, and how this has contributed to the develop ment of machines which show better quantitative and qualitative perfor mance with higher technical and economic efficiency. Following an explanation of the basic concepts of quantum optics, with particular reference to the character of light waves and particles, the function of the laser is described in detail, this description being concerned mainly with the coherent properties of radiated light. There then follow a few important examples of the different uses to which the laser can be put. In der ersten Halfte unseres Jahrhunderts betrachteten es die Biochemiker als ihre Hauptaufgabe, die Wege des Stoffwechsels in lebenden Zellen auf zuklaren. Heute haben wir ein zwar noch nicht ganz vollstandiges aber doch weitgehend klares Bild von den chemischen Umsetzungen in lebenden Zellen. Etwa 1000 bis 2000 verschiedene Enzyme katalysieren die einzelnen Reak tionsschritte, die zum Auf-, Um- und Abbau von Kohlenhydraten, Pro teinen, Fetten und anderen Stoffklassen fijhren. In den letzten Jahren hat sich das Interesse der Biochemiker bevorzugt der Frage zugewandt, wie die chemischen AbHiufe in lebenden Zellen reguliert werden, urn die fijr alle Lebewesen charakteristische automatische Anpassung des Stoffwechsels an Veranderungen der Umweltbedingungen zu ermoglichen. Schon Anfang der vierziger Jahre haben Fritz Lipmannt, Hermann M. Kalckar2 und Feodor 3 Lynen ein grundlegendes Regulationsprinzip erkannt: Der Phosphatkreis lauf in den lebenden Zellen reguliert den Energiestoffwechsel nach dem Prin zip "die Nachfrage kontrolliert das Angebot". Da einerseits alle energie benotigenden Prozesse der Zelle mit einer Spaltung von ATP (Adenosin triphosphat) zu ADP (Adenosindiphosphat) und Phosphat, bzw. AMP (Adenosinmonophosphat) und Pyrophosphat verbunden sind und anderer seits die energieliefernden Prozesse mit der Synthese von ATP aus AMP bzw. ADP und Phosphat gekoppelt sind, kann der ATP-liefernde Energie stoffwechsel nur in dem Urn fang ablaufen, wie vorher ATP verbraucht Tab.

Arteriosclerosis is a reaetive disease of the vaseular wall, similar to inflammatory proeesses. It oeeurs in eonneetion with a "non-specifie mesenehymal reaetion". It is indueed and maintained by a large number of non-specifie faetors whieh include the well known risk faetors. The sclero genie faetors attaek the vaseular wall eells whieh should be regarded as belonging to the mesenehymal system. The pathologieal reaetion of the vaseular wall eells is indispensable for the eommeneement of the sclerotie proeess. The ehanges in wall strueture eaused by the pathologie al mes enehymal reaetion are deeisive faetors in the development of seeondary pathologieal symptoms (lipidosis, fibrinosis, neerosis and thrombosis). Measures for the prevention of this eondition must take aeeount of the multiple eausative faetors. The disease is by no means eaused solely by wrong eating habits, in partieular the exeess of fat in the diet; a large number of other faetors playapart, as has been demonstrated by animal studies.

Ein Vergleich der Hauptkomponenten der Planeten atmospharen zeigt, daB unsere Atmosphiire bei weitem den hochsten Oxy dationsgrad erreicht hat und damber hinaus als einzige freien Sauerstoff in betrachtlicher Menge enthalt (Tab. 1). Eine Elementhiiufigkeit, die der jenigen der Solarmaterie nahekommt, ist nur in den Atmosphiiren der groBen Planeten Jupiter und Saturn zu finden, die Wasser stoff und Helium als Hauptkomponenten besitzen. In diesem Zustand war die Masse der Einzelpartikeln zu klein, urn fliichtige Komponenten festzuhalten. The existing hunger in many developing countries forces us to reflect if, and to what extent the soils of our earth are capable of producing sufficient amounts of vegetable staple food. The most important soil geographic areas of the earth are analysed with regard to their yield potential for vegetable food resources. The tundra bears scarcely any importance for the production of cultivated plants. The soils of the cool till moderately warm moist climate have mostly turned into podzols; these are rather acidic and impoverished sites with a climate relatively unfavorable for plant growth. Adjacently to the south a soil region with moderately warm, humid climate will follow, which is favorable for plant growth. In this region are still largely unutilized reserves for crop production. The soils of the mediterranean climate are very dry during summer time, so that only such plant species can be taken under production, which can withstand the summer drought. Here the water holding capacity of the soils as well as the ground water table in the valleys are playing a decisive role. The soils of the long grass prairie (Brunizems) are quite fertile and especially qualified for corn production. The yield potential of the soils, situated in the short grass prairie is limited and curbed by the semihumid and semiarid climate respectively. In this region belong the exceptionally fertile Black Earth (Chernozem) Soils as well as the like wise fertile Chestnut Soils.

The objective of this lecture is to describe and to analyze the orientation behavior of flying flies towards different elementary patterns in their optical environment. The investigations presented here so far are confined to one dimension: the angular rotation of the fly around its vertical axes, caused by a flight torque signal which in turn is generated by the two wings. The pattern induced orientation behavior rests mainly on the observation, that elementary parts of the retinae and their associated nerve structures operate independently and lead to asymmetric induced torque responses when an object is symmetrically moved. The observations are in accordance with the hypothesis that spontaneous pattern differentiation by flies is due to a parallel organisation of identical motion perception mechanisms whose computational power rests on a central parametric control. Resume Cette conference a pour objet de decrire et d'analyser Ie comportement d'orientation de mouches en vol vers divers patterns elementaires places dans leur entourage visuel. Les recherches presentees ici sont limitees pour Ie moment a une seule dimension: la rotation angulaire de la mouche autour d'un axe vertical, telle que la provoque Ie couple de rotation en gendre par Ie mouvement des deux ailes. Ce comportement d' orientation induit par un pattern repose simplement sur l'observation que des parties elementaires des deux retines et des structures nerveuses qui leur sont associees operent independament et conduisent a des couples induits asymetriques lorsqu'un objet est deplace symetriquement.
