Sovereign Fictions written by Ilya Kliger and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024 with Education categories.

"The nineteenth-century novel is generally assumed to be concerned with private lives and social relations. But Russian fiction, obsessively focused on scenarios of state power, was an exception to the rule. In Sovereign Fictions, Ilya Kliger shows that this encounter between realist fiction and political authority gave Russian novels a form unlike their counterparts in the west. Kliger explores Russian realism's distinctive construals of sociality through a broad range of texts from the 1830s to the 1870s, including works by Dostoevsky, Gogol, and Pushkin, and several lesser-known but influential books of the period, including Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time (1840), Ivan Goncharov's The Same Old Story (1847), Ivan Turgenev's Rudin (1856), Aleksei Pisemsky's One Thousand Souls (1858), and Vasily Sleptsov's Hard Times (1865). Kliger's book offers an important intervention in socially inflected theories of the novel and in current thinking on representations of power and historical poetics"--

The Transformation Of The World written by Jürgen Osterhammel and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-15 with Business & Economics categories.

A panoramic global history of the nineteenth century A monumental history of the nineteenth century, The Transformation of the World offers a panoramic and multifaceted portrait of a world in transition. Jürgen Osterhammel, an eminent scholar who has been called the Braudel of the nineteenth century, moves beyond conventional Eurocentric and chronological accounts of the era, presenting instead a truly global history of breathtaking scope and towering erudition. He examines the powerful and complex forces that drove global change during the "long nineteenth century," taking readers from New York to New Delhi, from the Latin American revolutions to the Taiping Rebellion, from the perils and promise of Europe's transatlantic labor markets to the hardships endured by nomadic, tribal peoples across the planet. Osterhammel describes a world increasingly networked by the telegraph, the steamship, and the railways. He explores the changing relationship between human beings and nature, looks at the importance of cities, explains the role slavery and its abolition played in the emergence of new nations, challenges the widely held belief that the nineteenth century witnessed the triumph of the nation-state, and much more. This is the highly anticipated English edition of the spectacularly successful and critically acclaimed German book, which is also being translated into Chinese, Polish, Russian, and French. Indispensable for any historian, The Transformation of the World sheds important new light on this momentous epoch, showing how the nineteenth century paved the way for the global catastrophes of the twentieth century, yet how it also gave rise to pacifism, liberalism, the trade union, and a host of other crucial developments.

Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin In Germany written by Gerda Panofsky-Soergel and has been published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Authors, Russian categories.

The book consists of four studies on the famous Russian writer and historian, who lived from 1766-1826, and his connections with Germany. In 1789 Karamzin did not only visit various German towns and monuments, but also interview philosophers and men of letters like Kant, Nicolai, Herder or Wieland. The episodes from his LETTERS OF A RUSSIAN TRAVELER have been widely dismissed as fictional. However, as this author can show, archival records and even contemporary newspapers prove that Karamzin did not invent anything. On the contrary his epistles turn out to be an invaluable source of knowledge, for instance on the conditions of Russians, temporarily or permanently living at the time in Prussia, in particular Berlin and Potsdam. By a strange twist of history, several of Karamzin's autographs have found their way back to Germany, above all to the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, the very library the young Karamzin had borrowed a volume from more than two centuries before. These papers (aside from an earlier autograph of 1789 in Nurnberg) range from 1806 till 1821 and are commented upon in the last part of the present publication.

Solidarity And Responsibility written by Agnieszka Matusiak and has been published by Harrassowitz this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-21 with categories.

Solidarity and responsibility may certainly be recognized as the central ideas of the year 2020. The basic reason for such a statement, in central- and east-European perspective, was the 40th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements in Poland and the resulting development of the Solidarity trade union and social movement constituting the key catalyst of pro-democratic changes in the part of Europe. That anniversary was overshadowed, how ever, by another event - a global one, i.e. the COVID-19 pandemic, which turned upside down the former order of things and in a way forced us to thoroughly revise our attitude to the surrounding world. Solidarity, embraced by responsibility, becomes a positive counterpoint, both in the real and the symbolic dimension, for social integration, for building mutual trust and understanding, sensitivity, and a culture of cooperation in the light of which the Other is a being that is equal to us. The articles in this volume offer critical thought, in both a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, on the role, meaning and place of narrative, discourses, experiences and representations in the sphere of ethics, esthetics and culture (broadly understood) in the spirit of the new humanities and in particular its leading phrases: performative, affective and ethical (which is part of the aspect of affirmation) which place a strong emphasis on the causative interactive dimension of an entity acting towards both sentient beings and inanimate objects.

Under The Red Banner written by Elvira Grözinger and has been published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Communism and culture categories.

The majority of European Yiddish speaking Jews was murdered by Hitler's National Socialists, their cultural realm was destroyed. After the war, the Communist regimes suppressed Jewish culture, but despite emigration of Jewish survivors, small Jewish communities continued to exist and made efforts to revive their culture in most of the Communist countries. Jewish organizations, clubs, cultural societies and theatres were founded, and a great number of Yiddish books, newspapers and periodicals were printed, despite political pressure, hostility and persecution. The cultural activity which developed "under the red banner" cannot of course be compared to the immense impact the Yiddish culture experienced before the Second World War but it was an important phenomenon in Jewish history which remained uninvestigated for a long time and has not been described in a proper way until today. This volume of seventeen essays is a collection of papers delivered by scholars from the USA, Sweden, Israel, Germany and Poland at the conference on Yiddish Culture in the Communists Countries in the Postwar Era which was organized at the Jagiellonian University Cracow in cooperation with the University of Potsdam in November 2006.
