Seit inzwischen mehr als zehn Jahren wird die katholische Kirche durch den Missbrauchsskandal erschüttert. Jedoch scheint sie nicht fähig oder willens zu sein, diesen Skandal wirklich aufzuklären und echte Reformen anzugehen, um die systemischen Ursachen des Skandals zu beheben. Vielmehr hat sie sich mit ihrem in Jahrhunderten konstruierten Glaubens- und Lehrgebäude in eine theologische Sackgasse verrannt. So muss sie aber fürchten, dass die Gläubigen zunehmend auch den eigentlichen Glaubenskern, der auf alten heidnischen Mythologien und Heilslehren beruht, und die äußerst dunkle Seite der Kirchengeschichte in den Blick nehmen. Das würde dann zwangsläufig dazu führen, die Kirche als Ganzes infrage stellen. Die vorliegende Studie beleuchtet die Wurzeln und Entstehung des christlichen Glaubens und wie die frühen Christen mit äußerster Brutalität Andersgläubige verfolgten und ältere Religionen und Kulte mit politischer Protektion zerstörten. Ein Schwerpunkt bildet die Entwicklung des Papsttums, das sich sehr unchristlich mit Betrug und Gewalt zur alleinigen geistigen Autorität und zur weltlichen Herrschaft im Abendland aufschwang und keinerlei Gegner oder Kritik mehr duldete. Außerdem werden auch die Instrumente geistiger Bevormundung, womit die Gläubigen seit Jahrhunderten in geistiger Abhängigkeit gehalten werden, behandelt. Abschließend werden die aktuellen Kritikpunkte wie der Missbrauch an Kindern, der Zölibat oder die Diskriminierung von Frauen beleuchtet.

This volume deals with the intellectual and social context of two Christian teachers living in the second half of the second century. It presents a coherent reconstruction and interpretation of their teaching, often considered to be marginal within the development of early Christian doctrine. The first part of the book seeks to understand the Marcionite Apelles as a cultured person, who shaped his understanding of Christian doctrine in the context of the philosophical background and in permanent discussion with other Christian schools. In this respect Apelles coincides with the Christian Platonist Hermogenes. His opinions are described in the second part of the book. The author points out that teachers like Apelles and Hermogenes had to answer the questions of the educated in order to defend and to define their understanding of Christian faith.

Die Kirche darf also voller Stolz darauf hinweisen, dass ihre geistige Verkündigung eine wissenschaftliche Grundlage hat. Sie und die Religion im Allgemeinen sollte sich auf diesen Geist rückbesinnen. Ihre Glaubensbekenntnisse legen davon Zeugnis ab.

Papers presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2003 (see also Studia Patristica 39, 40, 41 and 42). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts.
